2.4. Component Functional Description
TURBINE
| Turbine Rotor | A fixed pitch three bladed horizontal axis rotor shall be used to convert the hydrokinetic energy into mechanical energy. |
| Three bladed free flow rotor | |
| Passive adaptive composite blades with foam core | |
| High performance with balance between thrust and power coefficient | |
| Special design for limited cavitation inception | |
| Clamped connection to the slow speed shaft | |
| Blades mounted in downstream configuration | |
| A lifting eye in the end cap allows for handling, when turbine vertical |
Slow Speed Shaft The slow speed shaft transfers torque and rotational speed from the rotor towards the gear set and thrust forces from the rotor to the bearing system. It will be built from non-corrosive cast iron (GGG NiCr20-2) as the slow speed shaft is exposed to the sea water at the blade connection area.
Turbine Shaft Sealing A set of lip seals is preventing the ingress of water or an oil leakage on the slow speed shaft. The set consist three lip seals, running on a tungsten carbide coated liner of stainless steel. Two lips are facing towards water, one lip is facing towards the gearbox oil.
Turbine Shaft Bearing The slow speed shaft is supported by two ball bearings in an O-arrangement.
Ball bearing provide minimum friction for early cut-in Drive Train Housing The drive train housing supports the bearing, sealing, gear set and generator.
The grey cast housing (GGG40) transfers all forces and moments from the drive train to the support structure. All static interfaces are sealed with O-rings. The housing will also provide hoisting points to lift the turbine. A removable lifting eye on the housing allows for handling when turbine is horizontal.
Planetary Gear Set A two stage planetary gear set is used for torque reduction between the slow speed shaft and the generator. Each stage consists a fixed annulus gear, the cage with three planet wheels is driven by the power input. The sun wheel is driving the high speed side.
| Gear ratio i: | 1:28 |
| Oil sump lubrication |
Cooling and Lubrication
The gears are lubricated by a common oil sump together with the slow speed shaft bearings. The oil is cooled with the drive train housing passively by the ambient water. Ferruginous particles will be separated from the gearbox oil at a magnetic plug. A further active filtering is not foreseen to reduce the complexity of the system.
The stator windings of the generator are cooled with the generator housing passively by the ambient water.
Generator The three phase generator is an induction type. The housing is specially designed for a submerged application including all external loads and the surrounding pressure. The A-side of the generator housing will be flanged to the drive train housing. The B-side provides an optional shaft end for the break system. All statically interfaces are sealed with O-rings against the surrounding water. Sufficient cooling is achieved by the ambient water.
The generator will be sealed with lip seals at the input shaft against the gearbox oil.
Dry mate connector sockets (Type STS subsea; XSK-1/0-MP; bulkhead male) are mounted to the generator. One per phase + ground; in total 4.
Note: The generator cables with plugs are not scope of SHY supply.
Multidisc Brake System
The full service brake is located on the B-side of the generator. It is engaged spring loaded and will be lifted hydraulically during operation of the turbine. The hydraulically power unit is located at the brake.
Note:
The brake wear limits the brake to 100 full load brake operations within one maintenance interval. The actual service life of the brake discs is strongly depending on operation cycles and outer circumstances. The number of brake cycles together with the related engaging speed are monitored for further evaluation.
Reasons for Braking:
Automatic braking due to quasi-static over speed (Brake engages, when continuous water speed was exceeded for a reasonable time period (e.g. 20 seconds).
Note: The stated 20sec is at this stage of development an assumption and need to be investigated in further development and testing procedures.
Automatic braking due to dynamic over speed (Brake engages immediately , when cut out speed is reached once)
Remote controlled park mode (bad weather forecast)
Emergency stop button
Grid loss
Electrical single failure on one turbine. Only the faulty turbine will stop. The others keep running.
Pressure drop in hydraulic system (hydraulic failure)
Brake release:
| First automatic release of brake time dependent after sufficient cool down time (e.g. 30 minutes) |
| If brake will automatic engage due to over speed again in the same tidal cycle, the next automatic release will occur earliest after the next |
slack tide. Next slack tide will be determined by using a 6hours timer integrated in the Software.
If brake will engage again in the next tidal cycle, the release must be released remote controlled by acknowledgement of human operator
Switch Cabinet (SC)
General note: The SC is designed to enclose all systems to operate one TURBINE. To achieve a safe and reliable remove or replacement of the turbine the turbine is equipped with dry mate connector sockets.
Switch Cabinet Housing
The housing is carried out in IP54 and is suitable for outdoor applications. The major components are shown in figure below.
Part 1 & 2: LFC(1) and LFM(2) are the grid filter Part 3: AIC is the inverter to the grid Part 4: Inverter for the turbine
Size of the cabinet will be roughly: 1500x2200x800 (WxHxD) Weight estimation: 600kg

Air Cooled Inverter
Air Cooled Grid Inverter & and Filter PLC Turbine Control & Grid Module Cooling System
Turbine is controlled using an air cooled inverter. The inverter provides frequency control with the following functionality:
| Partial-load operational range: Variable turbine speed for maximal power extraction. |
| Torque control: Torque limitation for drive train protection |
| Power limitation: Above the nominal water velocity the turbine is operated in controlled over speed to achieve a power limitation |
The combination of the grid inverter and the filter make sure that grid ready power is produced
The operating system of the turbine is running on an on-board controller.
A suitable air conditioning and heating system will provide proper environmental condition inside the cabinet
Corrosion prevention
Coating of external surfaces
Surfaces of rust vulnerable materials, exposed to the seawater are threatened as follows:
- sand blasting SA 2 ½ acc. DIN EN ISO 12944-4: 1998-07
| - 1 x 2K Epoxy-resin-primer | approx. 40 - 50 µm |
| - 3 x abrasion resistant coating | 3 x approx. 100-120 µm |
(2K Epoxy-resin)
| Sacrificial anodes | Subject to the platform´s system for cathodic protection, the outboard parts of the turbine will be protected with anodes fitted on the housing. |
| Material | : zinc |
| Mounting | : bolted |
Passive Swivel General note The passive swivel allows SIT 250 turbines operating in an downstream arrangement to passively yaw around its vertical axis. The turbine will be pulled passively by the current and will thereby be aligned into the flow direction. The swivel will feature two flanges. At one flange the turbine is connected whereas the other flange is for the mounting of the swivel to the platform.

2.5. Control philosophy
To limit the power of the turbine, the frequency controller is used to reduce the generator torque and thus allow controlled overspeed at water velocities above the nominal speed.
Power control by over speed Figure 2 illustrates the control strategy which is implemented to drive the generator. It can be seen that between zero and nominal power the power increases cubical and with flow. The turbine is used at its maximum coefficient of power.
Above the rated water speed the power is held constant. A further more increase in flow velocity will not lead to higher power levels.
The point above rated flow velocity respectively rated power (Rotor in controlled overspeed) is achieved by a constant product of electrical voltage and current torque limitation by current limitation of the inverter. Because of the fact the rotor increases the speed of the shaft when v > vnominal but inverter increases not the output voltage in proportional to the speed of the shaft the generator works in “field suppression”. The result is that the torque at the shaft decreases its torque with 1/n.
Figure 2: Control strategy power limitation
Characteristics of the control strategy “Over speed”:
| Unique torque/speed pair for each flow velocity |
| Optimal power below rated water speed |
| Constant power above rated water speed |
Torque control The torque control strategy described in Figure 3 below is a compromise to utilize the high power output of large rotors at slow water speeds whereas the torque peak around the nominal water speed will be cut off. Given this the drive train can be equipped with a larger rotor while the power output is reduced only in a small speed range. The values v0, v1 and v2 are given in section 2.3.
