About this file

This is a 2015 household survey report commissioned by the City of Thousand Oaks, California, and conducted by Godbe Research to assess residential behaviors and awareness regarding used oil disposal, household hazardous waste (HHW) management, home improvement activities, and water conservation. The survey employed a mail methodology with a sample size of 800 respondents drawn from approximately 97,274 adults in the city's 46,984 housing units, fielded between June 4 and June 15, 2015, with a margin of error of 3.45%. Key findings indicate that the vast majority of residents (83.6%) utilize mechanics or oil change shops rather than performing oil changes themselves; those who do change their own oil most commonly dispose of used oil at auto parts stores (approximately 12.4%) or the City HHW Facility (approximately 8.0%); nearly two-thirds of respondents engage in gardening, and approximately half participate in home improvement or painting activities; and approximately 48.7% of residents dispose of extra fertilizers, pesticides, paint, or household cleaning supplies at the City HHW Facility. The survey data were weighted to the American Community Survey to reflect actual population characteristics of Thousand Oaks residents in terms of gender, age, ethnicity, education, and income, and extensive demographic breakdowns by age, home zip code, ethnicity, education level, home type, and income are provided throughout the report to identify behavioral patterns and inform targeted outreach strategies.

The survey results reveal significant opportunities for increasing HHW Facility utilization, as approximately 29.4% of residents who personally change oil have used the facility, and approximately 39.2% have used neither the facility nor certified centers, with the primary stated reason being lack of awareness (18.9% did not know about the facility). Convenience and proximity were cited as key factors influencing facility usage, with 32.5% of users identifying convenience as their primary reason and 19.4% citing proximity to their residence. Preferred information sources for HHW services include brochures, mailers, or flyers (more than two-thirds of respondents), newspapers (nearly half), and the City website (approximately 40%). The survey data indicate that residents aged 30 to 39 demonstrate higher propensity for engaging in DIY activities and oil changes, while Latino/Latina/Hispanic respondents showed lower rates of personally changing oil but higher rates of using professional services. Demographic analysis by zip code reveals that residents of the 91320 and 91361 areas demonstrated higher HHW Facility usage rates, suggesting variations in awareness or accessibility by geographic area within the city.

Summary

1. To begin, survey respondents were asked to indicate whether they personally change the oil in their vehicles or equipment. The vast majority said that they utilize a mechanic or oil change shop for this service. In contrast, approximately 1 in 6 respondents said they personally change the oil in their car(s), and less than 1 in 10 respondents reported they personally change the oil on other gas powered vehicles or equipment.

2. With respect to oil change frequency:

A majority of respondents indicated that they change the oil on their first car every

5,000 miles. Nearly 1 out of 5 respondents said they change the oil on this car every 3,000 miles. About 1 in 10 respondents said they change their oil every

7,500 or every 10,000 miles.

Slightly fewer residents change the oil on their second car every 5,000 miles, while about 1 out of 5 respondents said they change their oil every 3,000 or 7,500 miles. Similar to the responses for the first car, about 1 in 10 respondents said they change their oil every 10,000 miles.

The responses for the third car in the household are similar to the previous two.

Most oil changes for this car occur at every 5,000 miles, followed by every 3,000 miles. Oil changes at every 7,500 and 10,000 miles occur in smaller numbers.

Summary II

A plurality of respondents indicated that their car manufacturer recommends they change the oil every 5,000 miles. Nearly a quarter of respondents said their manufacturer recommendation for changing the oil on this car is every 3,000 miles, and 1 in 10 respondents said the recommendation to change their oil is every 7,500 or 10,000 miles.

The results for the second household car are nearly identical to the first car.

The responses for the third car in the household vary only slightly from the first and second cars. Fewer respondents said their manufacturer recommended oil changes at every 5,000 miles and 10,000 miles, while more said that their manufacturer recommended every 7,500 miles.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

6. The two most popular reasons given, mentioned by 2 out of 5 respondents, for disposing of oil in the manner previously described were “Convenience/Easy” and

“Best for environment/Safe/Right thing to do/Properly done.” All other responses garnered 5% or less mentions.

7. Almost a third of respondents who said they personally change the oil in their cars or equipment reported that they have used the Household Hazardous Waste Facility in

Newbury Park. Less than 1 in 10 respondents said they use Certified Centers, and about a quarter of respondents reported they use neither.

8. When asked why they chose to use the Household Hazardous Waste Facility or

Certified Centers for disposal, the most common answer was “Convenience/ Easy.”

This The next tier of responses focus on a desire to have the oil handled properly, and that the Facility and Centers were close by. All other mentions garnered less than 10% mentions.

Summary IV

9. Respondents who indicated they did not use the Facility or Centers were asked to give their reasons for that choice. The most frequently given answer was “Do not need/Nothing to dispose of,” offered by about 3 in 10 respondents. This was followed by “Did not know about it,” reported by about 1 in 5 respondents All other responses garnered less than 4% mentions. However, nearly half of the respondents had no answer for this question.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility. In comparison, about 1 out of ten respondents said they take it to a home improvement store or nursery, or simply put it in the garbage. All other means of disposal garnered less than 10% mentions.

13. About 3 in 10 respondents said they chose their disposal technique because it was the right thing to do for the environment for proper disposal or that it was convenient and easy. About 1 in 10 respondents said it was the “Best option/Way/Practice/Correct method.” All other responses received less than 10% mentions.

14. Next, the survey respondents were asked what steps they have taken in their household to conserve water. About two-thirds of respondents said they had installed low flow toilets, and more than half indicated they installed low flow showers. About 2 out of 5 respondents reported they had drip irrigation in place, and approximately one quarter indicated they had removed turf and perhaps received an associated rebate.

Nearly half of respondents reported “Newspaper” as their source, while 2 out of 5 respondents said their source was the City website. The electronic newsletter was cited by nearly 1 in 5 respondents and more than 1 out of 10 respondents said their source was calling or visiting the City Facility and Facebook. All other responses garnered less than 10% mentions.

19. More than 9 out of 10 respondents indicated they felt the information provided by the

City was useful (“very useful” 45.8%, “somewhat useful” 45.8%). In contrast, less than

4% of respondents did not feel the information was useful, and 5% of respondents had no answer for this question.

20. When asked where they get information on the disposal of used oil and other household hazardous waste, nearly half of respondents indicated they use the Internet for this purpose. In addition, about a quarter of respondents said they receive information on these issues from family or friends and the City website. About 1 out of

10 respondents reported getting information from home improvement stores and auto parts/supply stores. All other responses garnered less than 10% mentions.
