About this file
This is a 2015 survey report commissioned by the City of Thousand Oaks, California, and conducted by Godbe Research to assess household used oil disposal behavior, household hazardous waste facility awareness, home improvement activities, and water conservation practices among city residents. The survey employed a mail-based methodology targeting 800 adult residents (ages 18+) from the approximately 97,274 adults living in 46,984 housing units across Thousand Oaks during the fielding period of June 4-15, 2015, with a margin of error of 3.45%. Key findings indicate that 83.6 percent of respondents utilize mechanics or oil change shops for vehicle maintenance rather than changing oil themselves, with approximately one in six residents personally changing their car oil. Regarding disposal practices, approximately one in ten respondents who change their own oil take it to auto parts stores or repair facilities, while slightly fewer use the City Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Newbury Park. Nearly one-third of respondents reported using the HHW Facility, with convenience and environmental responsibility cited as primary motivations. The survey also examined home improvement and gardening activities, finding that two-thirds of respondents engage in gardening and approximately half participate in home improvement or painting projects. Water conservation efforts were prevalent, with two-thirds of respondents having installed low-flow toilets and more than half installing low-flow showers. The data were weighted to American Community Survey demographic characteristics to reflect actual population composition by gender, age, ethnicity, education, and income.
The survey included extensive demographic breakdowns by gender, age, home zip code, ethnicity, education level, and annual income to identify behavioral and preference variations across population segments. Internet sources emerged as the predominant information channel for do-it-yourself activities and water conservation, with nearly two-thirds of respondents utilizing online resources, while newspapers, brochures, mailers, and utility bill inserts also served as significant information sources. Regarding communication preferences, residents favored newspaper advertising (Acorn), bill inserts, brochures and mailers, and the City website for receiving information about water conservation and household hazardous waste services. Over 90 percent of respondents rated City-provided information as useful, with 45.8 percent rating it "very useful" and 45.8 percent rating it "somewhat useful." Among residents not utilizing HHW facilities or certified centers, approximately 30 percent reported having no need for such services, while 20 percent indicated lack of awareness about facility locations and services. The survey data identified significant opportunities for targeted outreach, particularly among younger demographics, renters, and specific ethnic communities, to increase awareness and utilization of household hazardous waste disposal resources.
