About this file

This statement of work outlines tasks for a multi-year federal contract to develop a multifunctional material for acoustic noise mitigation and thermal management applications. The contractor will characterize mechanical, thermal, and thermal cycling properties of hollow microparticles coated with a polymer chosen by NASA for its radiation cooling capabilities. Acoustic impedance and radiation thermal testing will assess the effect of polymer coating on acoustic absorption and thermal conductivity. The contractor will also conceptualize a multi-functional liner design for TRL 4 testing by NASA, participate in monthly meetings, and submit a final report. The timeline stretches from October 2023 to October 2024 and includes fabricating acoustic test specimens, shipping samples to a university collaborator, and potentially designing and fabricating the liner for radiation coating and dynamic gas turbine engine noise liner testing if prior tasks prove successful.

Multifunctional Material for Acoustic Noise Mitigation and Thermal Management Applications

SOW for FY 2024 Period of Perfomance (Nov. 1, ’24 to Sept 30, ’24) There is a need for a lightweight porous material system for acoustic attenuation applications.

The material system will have open porosity on the incidence face of the noise. The porosity, pore size and tortuous path will vary through the thickness of the material so that the incident acoustic energy is absorbed/dissipated as it transmits through the thickness such that the exiting acoustic energy is minimized or acceptable. This concept will evaluate various material particles from gravel to aerogel and from single to multi layered systems in coordination with NASA Subject Matter Expert (SME). Preliminary results have indicated potential success from low (500 Hz) to high (6,000 Hz) frequency. Similar material structure and different coating materials can be used to manage thermal dissipation in hot structures. Due to the similar architectures and materials involved in the two technologies, it seems feasible that their integration can yield a multi-functional material for both thermal and acoustic management in applications like urban air mobility vehicles. This proposal task will focus on development of ultra-lightweight acoustic absorption material/structure system for waste heat recovery from the nozzle of a high bypass ratio gas turbine engine.

Tasks for the FY 2024 are listed below.

Task 1: Assessment of Multifunctionality of Microporous Material with Thermal Characteristic : Steps of NC A&T effort are listed below.

NASA will provide the polymer chosen for the radiation cooling, that has been well characterized for thermal management.

Contractor shall apply this polymer coating on hallow micro particles and then complete the preparation of impedance test specimens.

ï Contractor shall perform acoustic impedance test and reports results to NASA. The samples shall be supplied to NASA for radiation thermal assessment.

ï Contractor shall provide an assessment of the effect of polymer coating on the hallow micro-particles will be assessed both thermal radiation and acoustic study.

Task 2: Conceptual Design of Multifunctional Liner for TRL 4 test(s).

Contractor develop a material (hallow micro particles or other) with acoustic absorption and thermal conductivity properties.

ï Contractor shall provide conceptual design for a multi-functional liner to be evaluated in a TRL4 test article (characteristics to be provided by NASA)

Task 3: Participate in monthly meetings.

Task 4: Submit a final report summarizing effort and results.
