About this file
This is a Brand Name Justification document from NASA Shared Services Center for the procurement of Kepco BOP 36-28GL 1000-Watt Magnet Power Supplies, specifically optimized for very low ripple and noise with GPIB Control.
The justification outlines the requirement for two power supplies for GSFC's 42-foot coil magnetic calibration facility, with a 4-6 week delivery timeline. The Kepco BOP 36-28GL was selected due to its uniquely low electrical current noise characteristics, which are unmatched in the commercial market according to research by PI Deirdre Wendel. The document emphasizes that alternative power supplies would compromise the magnetic calibration of spacecraft and magnetometers, particularly impacting the MagQuest project funded by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. This capability is critical for maintaining the World Magnetic Model, which supports America's warfighters through geospatial information services.

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION
NASA SHARED SERVICES CENTER
RECOMMENDATION AND DETERMINATION TO SOLICIT FROM ONE SOURCE
OR BRAND NAME
PICK ONE
Sole Source:
☐I recommend that NASA, NASA Shared Services Center negotiate with Vendor Name only for Enter Supply or Service to be procured. The total estimated cost of this effort is Enter Dollar amount and the estimated period of performance or lead-time for delivery is Date.
OR
Brand Name Justification:
☒I recommend that NASA, NASA Shared Services Center negotiate with only with vendors who can provide the subject band name from Kepco for 1000-Watt Magnet Power Supply, Optimized for Very Low Ripple and Noise, GPIB Control. The estimated period of performance or lead-time for delivery is 4-6 Weeks.
This recommendation is for the acquisition of supplies or services determined to be reasonably available from only one source/only one manufacture. Competition is impractical for the following reasons (please answer the questions below):
1. What are the reasons for soliciting only the suggested source/suggested brand name? Please provide the unique characteristics of the items or services along with the supporting rationale and the market research performed to substantiate your reason for the suggested source/brand name.
GSFC requires two power supplies for its 42 foot coil magnetic calibration facility. This requires exceptionally low electrical current noise. The Kepco BOP 36-28GL offers the lowest electrical current noise on the market, optimized for applications requiring exceptionally low ripple and noise levels. A search by the project PI, Deirdre Wendel, has revealed that the low noise is unmatched by any other commercially available power supply, ensuring the highest precision and stability for sensitive testing and operational requirements.
2. What is the impact to the government if another vendor/brand is used? Include any dollar, schedule, or compatibility impacts if possible.
Another type of power supply will not provide the current stability required, introducing noise into the magnetic calibration of spacecraft and magnetometers. Exceptionally low noise is required for the upcoming MagQuest project funded through the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. Without this power supply, GSFC will not be able to perform the required calibrations to the required performance. IN the long run this will impact the governments ability to maintain the World Magnetic Model, impacting the geospatial information required for the support of Americas’ warfighters.
