About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirement for a Variable-Energy Ion Source to be integrated into the Space Instruments Development Lab (SPINDL) space-simulation chamber at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. The procurement is for one unit with a delivery deadline of 15 August 2025 to the SPINDL Lab in Huntsville, AL, designed to support long-term measurements of science-grade ion sensors under various space environment simulation conditions including Low Earth Orbit, Geosynchronous Orbit, Solar Wind, magnetotail, and lunar surface.

The ion source must meet specific technical specifications, including an ion energy range of 10 eV – 1 keV, beam current of 1 µA – 0.1 mA, and energy resolution ≤ 10%. Additional requirements include rugged operation at pressures down to 1 × 10⁻⁵ Torr, dual-gas inlets with precise flow control, high-voltage supply of 0-300V, digital and analog control interfaces, and environmental durability with operating temperatures of 0°C – 50°C. The device must have a compact volumetric envelope of ≤ 200 mm × 200 mm × 300 mm and weigh ≤ 10 kg, with provisions for filament kits and spare hardware included.
