About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a thermal cycling test of composite material coupons. NASA is evaluating candidate materials for composite cryotank applications and requires composite coupons to be cycled between room temperature and 302°F through immersion in liquid nitrogen. The SOW specifies the number of coupons, coupon dimensions, and number of cycles required for various test types, including lamina compression, laminate tension, in-plane shear, and tension-tension fatigue. NASA will supply the machined coupons for the thermal cycling tests. This SOW is associated with a federal contract opportunity (Solicitation Number 80NSSC876570Q) issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center to conduct the required thermal cycling tests.

Text version

Thermal Cycling of Composite Materials Summary NASA is currently evaluating candidate materials for composite cryotank applications. As part of this evaluation NASA requires composite coupons are cycled in between room temperature and ‐302oF through direct immersion into liquid nitrogen.

Tasks and requirements The number of coupons, dimensions, and number of cycles is outlined in the table below:

Abbr. Test Coupon Size # of Coupons # of Cycles

0C Lamina Compression 5.50 x 0.5 14 50

UNC Lamina Compression 5.50 x 0.5 14 50

UNC Lamina Compression 5.50 x 0.5 10 100

UNT Laminate Tension 10.0 x 1.0

10 100

0C Lamina Compression 5.50 x 0.5 14 100

UNC Lamina Compression 5.50 x 0.5 14 100

IPS In‐Plane Shear 10.0 x 1.0

10 100

TTF Tension‐Tension Fatigue 10.0 x 1.0 10 100

NASA will supply machined coupons for thermal cycling.
