About this file
This is a Statement of Work for NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to procure tribological testing equipment for erosion testing at cryogenic temperatures.
MSFC EM22 requires a supplier to provide a -120°C cooled sample holder integrable into an Air Jet Erosion Platform, an upgraded Air Jet Erosion Test Platform incorporating existing 900°C heating capability, nozzles, and control PC components, and installation and training services. The procurement addresses the need to test erosive wear mechanisms relevant to lunar and Martian surface operations, specifically solid particle erosion caused by lunar regolith and Martian dust at low temperatures representative of celestial environments. The work will be performed at Building 4711, Room E176, Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama, with a period of performance from April 2026 through August 2026. The procurement must be obligated by August 31, 2026.

STATEMENT OF WORK
1. Objective/Requirements
NASA MSFC EM22 supports tribological testing of materials and hardware for internal NASA programs and for external partners. The Tribology group at MSFC currently has a capability to test the critical wear mechanism known as solid particle erosion, but that capability is limited to room temperature and high temperature. Erosion is an important wear mechanism for lunar and Martian applications. Lunar regolith is known (from NASA’s Apollo missions) to cause problems for operations at the lunar surface. Among these problems, high speed plumes of lunar regolith can be generated and strike hardware surfaces, causing erosive wear. Days-long dust storms are known to take place on Mars, throwing Martian dust into the atmosphere and possibly causing erosive damage to hardware at the surface. This procurement will give MSFC a capability to test for erosive wear at temperatures down to -120°C, temperatures that better represent low temperatures experienced on the Moon and Mars. The procurement must be obligated by August 31, 2026.
