About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a compact, pulsed, q-switched Nd:YAG particle image velocimetry (PIV) laser required by the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC). The laser must have a minimum 25-Hz repetition rate, produce 532-nm output with at least 100 mJ per pulse, and have a pulse width of no more than 10 ns. Key requirements include linear polarization, low divergence and energy drift, and uniform beam profile. The laser system must be highly portable, with dimensions not exceeding 16 x 6 x 4.5 inches, and operate on 110 VAC power. Delivery is required within 10 weeks of order placement and must include documentation on the laser's performance. This SOW is associated with a NASA Special Notice solicitation for the same compact PIV laser system.

Specifications for a Compact Scientific Pulsed Nd:YAG PIV laser
BACKGROUND:
The NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has requirements for a minimum 15-Hz, q-switched, Nd:YAG pulsed laser for applications in particle image velocimetry (PIV). The system must be a dual head Nd:YAG that can produce output wavelength at 532 nm. The output of the system shall be linearly polarized. The system will be primarily used for measuring and inferring gas phase velocities or liquid phase velocities within gas phase. We also plan to use the system to provide a diffuse backlight in shadowgraph experiments to measure liquid droplets from an atomizer in swirling flow at non-reacting conditions to obtain droplet size distribution, droplet sizing, and droplet velocities.
PIV is an image-based measurement tools in which we convert the laser beam into a thin sheet, typically 3-inches wide; this laser sheet is directed to the test section, which is in another room, using mirrors. The optics to form and direct the laser sheet may introduce some natural energy losses as the light passes through or is reflected. Therefore, we require a laser system capable of generating high power. High power is needed to achieve good signal/noise within the images, and to handle necessary loss of energy as the beam is directed using as many as ten mirrors. The laser should also have short pulse width to “freeze” the seeded particles’ flow. Additionally, the laser will be used in two or more labs, and must be easily portable (i.e., small and light weight) and must be small enough to fit within our available space and be operational on our laser tables;
the overall rectangular envelope cannot be larger than 16 inches long (laser beam exit along this length) by 6 inches wide, by 4.5 inches high. Included in the definition of portability is being able to operate using 110 VAC electrical service so that the laser can be plugged into a standard grounded outlet. Any additional electronics should be able to fit underneath the table, with a footprint within 20 inches by 10 inches and be no more than 16 inches high.
The following are the minimum salient characteristics of the compact Nd:YAG laser required for our optical diagnostic measurements. These salient characteristics are equivalent to the EverGreen series of lasers. If proposing an equivalent laser, the Offeror must provide supporting documentation, in sufficient detail, for the Government to determine if the characteristics of the proposed laser meet all of the below salient characteristics.
