PATENT OFFICE.

CHARLES GILBERT HAWLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR. To LoCOMOTIVE FIRE

BOX COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.

BRICK-SUPPORTING THERMIC SIPHON.

Application filed May 13, 1922. serial No. 560,670.

To all chon, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLEs GILBERT

HAwLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in and for Brick-Supporting Thermic Siphons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention. relates to improvements in so-called Nicholson thermic siphons and has particular reference to the adaptation of such siphons for the support of arch brick.

A thermic siphon is a hollow water wall of substantially triangular shape, distin guished by a bulging bottom portion or beam portion, an extension of which, at the front lower end, forms the intake neck of the si phon. The siphon is installed in a vertical longitudinal position within the firebox of a locomotive, and one of its offices is to serve.

as a support for the brick composing the fire .. 12 approximate 3A of an inch. A greater arch of the locomotive firebox. My invention will be readily understood on reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a locomotive firebox embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross-section there portion of a thermic siphon of the modified form comprising my invention, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of reduced size, showing the manner in which thermic si phons heretofore have been equipped with studs, 2, for the support of the arch brick, 3.

The object of this invention is two-fold, to improve the form of the siphon with ref erence to the stay-bolts which join its sides and so to shape the bulging portion of the siphon as to adapt it for the direct support of arch brick without resort to such studs as t In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown a firebox containing two of the ther inic siphons S, each having a bulging bottom or beam portion S' terminating in an intake neck S. As shown, these siphons, together with the sides 4 of the firebox, serve to sup port the several rows of firebrick 3, which constitute the arch A. My invention is best depicted in Fig. 3. The body of the siphon is made from a single sheet of metal, which is folded upon itself and given the bulging form here shown. This bulging form differs from all others in that it does not conform to a circle in cross section, but is slightly dis torted for the purpose of providing the brick supporting ledges S. The kind and extent of distortion practice is well represented at points 5 and 6, where the departure from circular form is depicted. By departing from a true circular form to the extent of little more than 4th of an inch at these points I am able to provide a ledge S of sub stantially 40° inclination to the horizontal, which is amply abrupt to safely support the arch brick. I accomplish this by forming the portions 7, 7, upon a radius substantially equal to the diameter of the bulging portion S. At the point 8 this radius merges into the 40° section S and the latter, at the point 9, merges into the vertical or side portion 10 of the siphon. The radius 11 and the radius radius may be used, but the radius defined is adequate in the case of a beam portion S having an external diameter of approximate ly seven inches. This form and departure from circular shape is made possible by the rigidity of the plate sections S8, which re

: sist distortion and therefore serve to main- 8 tain the curved sections 8 and 9 intact. The marked advantage of the structure is found in the ability to place the lowermost row of stay-bolts B close to the radius bends 12.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1. A thermic siphon including spaced parallel side walls and a bulged tubular bot tom portion of a diameter greater than the spacing between said side walls, the lower part of said bottom portion being semi cylindrical and the upper part thereof in cluding walls substantially parallel with said :

side walls, there being inclined ledge walls walls and said walls forming the upper part of said bulged bottom portion, which ledge walls each provides a full face contact seat for one end of an associated fire brick.
