GAOA Anan Wildlife Observatory Reconstruction Phase 2 Wrangell Ranger District, Tongass National Forest
Background: The Anan Wildlife Viewing Area is located 35 miles southeast of the town of Wrangell.
Anan Creek has the largest run of pink salmon in Southeast Alaska. This abundance of salmon attracts large concentrations of black bears, bald eagles, harbor seals, and several brown bears.
People from around the world come to enjoy the unique experience Anan offers. Existing facilities consist of a covered viewing shelter, decks, photo blind, and staircases. The lower deck and staircases are nearing the end of their service life and need replacement.
Objectives: The project has several objectives, all of which revolve around the demolition and reconstruction of a lower deck and staircases of the Anan Wildlife Observatory. Base Item work includes the demolition and removal of the lower timber observation deck and stair structures, including footings; construction of footings, stem walls and structural elements, a new two-level metal and FRP lower observation deck and guardrails, and an aluminum spiral staircase; and other miscellaneous work. Option Item work includes design and construction of a remote power and communication system, and other miscellaneous work.
Location: The Anan Wildlife Observatory is located 35 air miles SE of Wrangell, Alaska, on the Cleveland Peninsula. Access to Anan Bay is by a 35-minute float plane flight or 90-minute boat ride from Wrangell.
The trailhead is located on the shore of Anan Bay, at the mouth of the saltwater lagoon. The half mile trail leads through the rain forest along the edge of the lagoon to Anan Creek, which it follows briefly before reaching the observatory site. The latitude and longitude of the observatory site are approximately 56.179032° N, -131.883935° W.
