About this file

This document is a synopsis for a NASA Research Announcement for the HyTEC Phase 2 Small Core Technology Demonstration. NASA intends to collaborate with industry through a cost-sharing arrangement to integrate and demonstrate key technologies to advance small turbofan engine core technologies. The objectives are to demonstrate a 5-10% fuel burn benefit versus 2020 best-in-class single-aisle aircraft engines by 2030, extract up to 10% power from an engine core for electrified aircraft propulsion, and demonstrate high-blend sustainable aviation fuels in 2030s combustors. The anticipated NRA release date is January 3, 2023 with an offer due date of April 13, 2023. All responsible sources may submit an offer which will be considered by NASA. The NAICS code is 541715 with a size standard of 1,500 employees. An industry day is tentatively planned for late January 2023.

Synopsis for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

HyTEC Phase 2

As part of the NASA Advanced Air Vehicles Program (AAVP), the Hybrid Thermally Efficient

Core (HyTEC) Project was established to accelerate the development of small turbofan engine core technologies, culminating in an advanced core ground demonstration in the 2027 timeframe.

NASA GRC plans to issue a NASA Research Announcement (NRA) for HyTEC Small Core

Technology Demonstration.

The HyTEC core demonstration will achieve the following objectives:

• Demonstrate increased thermal efficiency with integrated high-power density-core engine technologies achieving a 5- to 10-percent fuel burn benefit, versus 2020 best in class, for early 2030s EIS single-aisle aircraft.

• Achieve up to 10-percent power extraction from a modern commercial turbofan engine core with the thrust, efficiency, operability, and durability to enable the benefits of electrified aircraft propulsion at a vehicle level.

• Demonstrate the effective and efficient operability of high blend (>80%) Sustainable

Aviation Fuels (SAFs) in 2030s EIS combustors.

NASA intends to collaborate with industry in a cost sharing arrangement for the integration and demonstration of key technologies that can strengthen the U.S. industry’s position on small cores for a future single-aisle aircraft.

The Government does not intend to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12.

The NAICS Code and Size Standard are 541715 and 1,500 respectively.

The anticipated release date of NRA is on or about January 3, 2023, with an anticipated offer due date of on or about April 13, 2023.

All responsible sources may submit an offer which shall be considered by the agency.
