(16) Description. The National Weather Service (NWS) is currently undergoing a major project to modernize all of its radiosonde systems. Previously, a typical NWS Upper Air Station used a radiosonde system with manually launched balloons. The system consisted of an Inflation Building where the balloons were prepared and a large tracking antenna inside a protective dome (called a ‘radome’) to receive the radiosonde data. Typically, the antenna and radome are located on the roof of the Inflation Building, but the radome is located on top of another building or at ground level at a few sites.
The new radiosonde systems no longer require large tracking antennas, and all the old tracking equipment is being retired. The NWS is exploring the prospect of removing the radomes and weatherproofing the exposed roof at specified sites within the Continental United States (CONUS). The radomes that protect the tracking antennas are expensive to maintain. They often develop leaks, birds and bats can get inside, and they require regular cleaning and painting. Because of this, the NWS wants to remove all the radomes along with the old antennas.
NWS has identified 53 Upper Air sites inside the CONUS as candidates for radome removal. The NWS is seeking an engineering firm capable of removing radomes from these sites without requiring major repairs or structural changes to the buildings they are attached to.
