About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) related to a Request for Information (RFI) for the SUU-72 Pylon Upper Panel Replacement. The RFI is being issued by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command, seeking information from industry for the procurement and replacement of the SUU-72 Pylon Upper Panels.

The key details are:

  • The SUU-72 Pylons have been in desert storage and suffer from corrosion damage, primarily focused on the aluminum upper panel. The existing aluminum alloy is no longer acceptable, so a replacement alloy needs to be identified.
  • The awarded contractor will be expected to manufacture replacement upper panels and install them into the refurbished SUU-72 Pylons, which must meet a minimum 30-year service life.
  • The initial requirement is for the first 9 refurbished airworthy Pylons and PLAs to begin induction in Q4 Fiscal Year 2029, with a total of 43 pylons to be refurbished.
  • Questions on the RFI are due by 4:00 P.M. CST on September 26, 2024.

Request for Information: SUU-72 Upper Panel

Questions and Answers

1. What is the quantity of the expected repaired pylons?

ANSWER: We will need the first 9 refurbished airworthy Pylons and PLAs to begin induction to SUU-103 modification starting in Q4, Fiscal Year 2029 and ending Q4, Fiscal Year 2030. The total number to be refurbish is 43.

2. Will the SUU-72 pylons delivered to the awarded contractor be coming directly from desert storage in the original SUU-72 configuration? Or will the pylons be delivered after activities such as external removals (such as ACM fairing sets) and internal removals have already been removed?

ANSWER: The pylons will be delivered with internal components (wiring and ducts) removed.

3. What pylon configuration is the awarded contractor expected to deliver after completion of the proposed modification?

ANSWER: SUU-72. However, pending RFIs, market research and acquisition strategy it may be optimal to perform the modification to a SUU-103 during the flight-worthy phase. Any input or reasoning for a streamlined process, from the vendor’s perspective, is welcomed in your response to the RFI.

4. Aside from the material specification change, are the new upper panel configuration and sizing requirements assumed to be identical as legacy part?

ANSWER: Except for the material, the Upper Panel configuration and installation will be per existing drawings. The AFNWC will work with the contractor regarding substitutions of Boeing specifications with Military and Industry standards.

5. Are there any additional pylon modifications associated with the upper deck detail and/or assembly that Customer would like incorporated into the new installed upper deck?

ANSWER: Not now. However, depending on findings once the Pylon is disassembled, additional modifications may be necessary to ensure airworthiness and service life requirements are met.
