About this file

This is a historical government file documenting lighthouse construction initiatives at Sturgeon Point, Michigan, prepared by a federal agency responsible for maritime infrastructure. The document outlines efforts to establish a lighthouse station at Sturgeon Point, located midway between Point au Sable and Thunder Bay Island on Lake Huron. The project was designed to assist vessels that deviated from their direct course across the mouth of Saginaw Bay, enabling them to establish a new departure point and shorten their transit. Construction work proceeded in phases, beginning with land acquisition and progressing to structural development, with the dwelling completed and the tower prepared to receive the lantern apparatus.

An initial appropriation of fifteen thousand dollars was recommended for lighthouse construction at the site. Subsequently, a separate appropriation was made available to procure the necessary land title. By the time of this report, the land had been purchased and title papers were under examination by the United States district attorney, pending submission to the Attorney General for validation of the title transfer to the United States. Work at the station advanced according to plans approved on July 6th, with construction progressing sufficiently to complete the dwelling enclosure and ready the tower for lantern installation. The document indicates that exhibition of the light was expected to commence upon completion of these final preparations.

Sturgeon Point, on the tvestern shore of Lake H~tron, 111ichigan.- As the slJore line was within 40 feet of the tower, aud coming uearer a..._ CP.,/ with ever_y storm, five cribs were huilt, projecting radially from the shore ·~· line, with an aggregate length of 305 feet. The width of each crib was /f?{p 8 feet and the average depth 5 feet. A breakwater 56 feet long, 4 feet ' wide, and 3 feet deep was also constructed along the shore line, to pro-tect the stable from being undermined and carried into the lake. The cribs were built of 2-inch plank, laid in flat courses and spiked togetl.Jer.

They were floored and decked with 2-iuch plank and filled with stone aud gra\el. The breakwater was built of logs found on the shore.

After the crib-work was completed, the buildings, fences, walks, and grounds were put in good condition. Since the work was completed the north crib has settled considerauly, uut the settlement was equal and the crib is secure. There was no accretion, lwwever, between it and the adjoining crib, so the space will be partly filled with brush and stone. There was no change in any of the other cribs, and the accretion
