About this file

The document is a Street Light Data Dictionary and Context file created by the City of Pittsburgh, detailing a comprehensive street light inventory conducted in 2020 through a contract with Cyclomedia. The inventory covers street lights within the city's right of way, including utility poles, though some lights could not be collected due to construction or obstructions. The data dictionary provides detailed information about street light characteristics, including unique identification numbers, bulb types (high-pressure sodium or LED), fixture types (such as Acorn, Cobra, Decorative, and Shoe Box), wattage, pole types, and spatial location coordinates.

The dataset is maintained in the city's asset management and GIS system Cartegraph, with records for lights and poles merged into a single entry. The document includes visual examples of different light fixture types and explains various classification methods, such as pole types (including light, utility, trolley, and signalized intersection poles) and street use classifications based on US Federal Highway Administration standards. While the document does not indicate a specific contract opportunity, it provides a comprehensive technical overview of Pittsburgh's street light infrastructure, offering detailed metadata about the city's lighting assets that could potentially support future infrastructure or maintenance projects.

Street Light Data Dictionary and Context

Summary:

The street light data being provided is all of the lights in the city currently inventoried by the City of Pittsburgh. In 2020, the City of Pittsburgh contracted with Cyclomedia to inventory all of the street lights in the city’s right of way. This data is not a complete inventory of all lights since some could not be collected such as lights on city steps or lights that were on streets that could not be collected due to construction or other obstructions. The dataset also includes all utility poles without lights collected in this process. This information is maintained in the city’s asset management/work order management system Cartegraph and GIS. The records for the light and pole are treated as one record with details about both merged together. Below is a data dictionary for the fields included in the dataset that are not self-explanatory.

• ID: Unique ID shared between Cartegraph and GIS. This is auto-numbered and should never be changed.

• Bulb Type: High pressure sodium or LED.

• Type: type of light fixture:

o Acorn: Generally only found on pedestrian scale lighting and generally HPS bulb:

o Cobra: Standard fixture type can be HPS/LED bulb.

o Decorative: used as a catch-all for fixtures not in other categories. Can be LED or HPS. The most typical fixture is pendant style such as below:

o Shoe Box: older style of light fixture usually has HPS bulb.

• Wattage: Wattage of light when available. Not all street lights have wattage stickers so this information could not be collected on those lights.

• Street Light Number: Number given by ACE/Duquesne Light to identify lights. The City did not collect this in the project with Cyclomedia so only some records have this information.

• Number of Fixtures: Number of light fixtures on a pole. If the value is 0 then this is a utility pole without a light. If the number is greater than 1 it can be assumed that all lights on the pole share the same attributes such as Bulb Type, Type, Wattage.

• Pole Type: classification for the style of pole:

o Light: standard light pole which can be metal or wood o No Pole: some lights have no poles like those in tunnels or attached to bridges and overpasses.

o Non-Standard: a catch all for poles that could not be classified in other categories.

o Signalized Intersection: poles used at traffic signals which may also have street lights attached.

o Trolley: old metal trolley poles some have lights/wires attached others are standalone poles.

o Utility: standard wooden or metal pole used for utilities without a light attached.

• Street Use Classification: type of street where the pole/light are located. These classifications are based off of US Federal Highway Admin standards:

https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/processes/statewide/related/highway_functional_ classifications/section03.cfm

• Park: included to indicate if the light/pole is in a city park.

• Signalized Intersection: included to indicate if the light/pole is part of a traffic signal.

• Spatial Y: Latitude

• Spatial X: Longitude https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/processes/statewide/related/highway_functional_classifications/section03.cfm https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/processes/statewide/related/highway_functional_classifications/section03.cfm
