Project Description The Government anticipates awarding a single contract. This culturally-sensitive project repairs the prominent granite-faced masonry walls and coping of historic Fort Wood, an 11-pointed star-shaped granite fort built between 1808 and 1811 that houses the pedestal on which the 152’ Statue of Liberty stands. Work entails various treatments including cleaning, repair, replacement and joint repointing work. Repair of the uppermost coping stones consists of patching stone faces, and selective partial or complete stone replacement, dependent upon the extent of deterioration. Various locations throughout the wall surface also require partial stone replacement. Repair of other deteriorated wall stone may include pinning and grouting faces, patching cracks and injecting adhesive into developing spalls throughout the Fort’s 23 walls. Mortar joint repointing requirements include selective replacement of failed coping joints and wall joints, as well as replacement of backer rod and sealant. The project includes substantial coordination and advanced logistics. Barging and security screening of all personnel and materials is required and material movement on Liberty Island is limited and must be coordinated around thousands of daily general public visitors.
