Statement of Work

1. General Description

The backshell of NASA’s Mars 2020 mission included 2 total heat flux sensors (P/N: 22171-01KS) and 1 radiometer (P/N: 22160-22KS-1.410) to measure heating during entry into Mars’ atmosphere. This procurement is for additional units identical to the flight units for use in ground-based testing to enable enhanced understanding of the flight data.

2. Total Heat Flux Sensor Requirements

The vendor shall deliver to the MEDLI2 project at NASA Ames Research Center eight (8) total heat flux sensors that meet the following requirements.

I. The total heat flux sensors shall conform to the drawing shown in Figure 1, with a barrel length of 1.410”.

II. The total heat flux sensors shall have a measurement range 0 – 15 W/cm2 or greater.

III. The total heat flux sensors shall have a measurement accuracy of ±1 W/cm2 or better.

IV. The total heat flux sensors shall have a time response of 50ms or lower to reach 63%of final value when exposed to step function V. The total heat flux sensors shall have at least 40 mV full scale electrical output at 15 W/cm2 VI. The total heat flux sensors shall not require any excitation.

VII. The total heat flux sensors shall include a separate near-surface temperature measurement using a Type-K Thermocouple.

VIII. The total heat flux sensors shall have 24 AWG stranded lead wires for both the heat flux and thermocouple outputs IX. The total heat flux sensors shall have an output impedance of less than or equal to 200 Ohms.

X. The total heat flux sensors shall have permanent part marking showing part number and serial number on the bottom sleeve.

XI. Each total heat flux sensor shall have a sensor calibration curve traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

XII. Each total heat flux sensor’s sensing surface shall be uniform without recessed or protruding material.

3. Radiometer Requirements

The vendor shall deliver to the MEDLI2 project at NASA Ames Research Center eight (8) radiometers that meet the following requirements:

I. The radiometers shall with a barrel length of 1.410”.

II. The radiometers shall have a measurement range of 0 – 15 W/cm2 or better.

III. The radiometers shall have a measurement accuracy of ±1 W/cm2 or better.

IV. The radiometers shall have a time response of 50ms or lower to reach 63% of final value when exposed to step function.

V. The radiometers shall have at least 40 mV full scale electrical output at 15 W/cm2

VI. The radiometers shall not require any excitation.

VII. The radiometers shall include a separate near-surface temperature measurement using a Type-K Thermocouple.

VIII. The radiometers shall have 24 AWG stranded lead wires for both the heat flux and thermocouple outputs

IX. The radiometers shall have an output impedance of less than or equal to 200 Ohms.

X. The radiometers shall have a sapphire window with a view angle of at least 150o.

XI. The radiometers shall have permanent part marking showing part number and serial number on the bottom sleeve.

XII. Each radiometer shall have a sensor calibration curve traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

4. Radiometer Window Witness Samples

The vendor shall deliver to the MEDLI2 project at NASA Ames Research Center twenty (20) sapphire radiometer windows:

I. The radiometer windows shall be 0.250" Dia. x 0.020" thick.

II. The radiometer windows shall come from the same lot(s) used for the radiometers described in Section 3.

5. Documentation

In addition to the total heat flux sensors and radiometers described above, the vendor shall supply the following documentation for each of the sensors.

I. Certificate of Conformance for fabrication process and product, II. Certificate of Calibration for each total heat flux sensor and radiometer, III. Calibration Test Report for each total heat flux sensor and radiometer, IV. Time response test results for each total heat flux sensor and radiometer, V. Traceability Record for each total heat flux sensor and radiometer assembly. The Traceability Record includes the job number, sensor part number & serial number, manufacturing date, lot numbers, and details on materials, assemblies, and sub-assemblies such as source, lot number, as well as serial numbers and part numbers. Materials list also indicate which material types are organic.

VI. Dimensional Inspection Requirements and Record, VII. Final drawings for total heat flux sensors and radiometers.

6. Deliverables

The vendor shall deliver the following hardware in accordance with the requirements detailed in this SOW to NASA Ames no later than 20 weeks after receipt of order:

I. Eight (8) total heat flux sensors, II. Eight (8) radiometers, III. Twenty (20) radiometer window witness samples, IV. All requested documentation for each deliverable
