About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the acquisition of an automated Gram stain machine for the APHIS Veterinary Services Division, Diagnostic & Biologics Section, CVB-Lab in Ames, Iowa.

The SOW specifies comprehensive technical requirements for a base instrument that must include a 12-slide carousel accommodating 26 mm x 76 mm microscope slides, with a rapid cycle time of 6-8 minutes and rotation speed capabilities from 10 to 1,000 rpm. The machine must feature a touch screen display with numeric and alpha-numeric programming keys, dimensions of 22 inches width by 10 inches height (lid closed) by 21 inches depth, and reagent and waste level monitoring with automatic clean cycles. Critical features include reagent and specimen traceability, user traceability, administrator password protection, 18-month reagent shelf-life, and must be made in the USA. The reagent settings must provide nine operator-selected decolorizer levels and three settings each for crystal violet and iodine (low, medium, high), plus three fixation settings. The contractor must provide a user manual, preventive maintenance kit, empty bottles for deionized or distilled water and alcohol, waste bottle with level detection, nozzle cleaning solution (>100 mL), and a complete set of gram stain reagents including decolorizer with counterstain, iodine, and crystal violet. The delivery deadline is within 60 days of award to USDA-APHIS-VS-CVB, 1920 Dayton Avenue, Ames, IA 50010, Attention: Jason Marquardt, REQ#7213, at a location with a delivery dock capable of accepting palletized shipments.
