SPECIFICATIONS AND STATEMENT OF WORK FOR

Foremost 4-1/2 Connector Tube Pipe (CTP) Drill Pipe

INTRODUCTION

The Yuma Area Office (YAO) within the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) currently operates four high-capacity production well systems in the Yuma area. The well fields have been established under various congressional acts to control groundwater levels and meet contractual obligations with various water districts for draining the Association Lands, provide return flows for delivery and water to Mexico to meet treaty obligations, and to provide return flow credits for the various water districts. In order to meet current and future commitments, new and replacement wells will be needed on a regular basis.

Reclamation needs the flexibility to have new and replacement wells designed and drilled using current industry standards and meeting Arizona State Requirements.

Currently, Reclamation operates and maintains 126 wells located in the following four well fields:

(1) Yuma Valley

(2) Yuma Mesa

(3) South Gila Valley

(4) 242 Well Field

Existing wells vary from a minimum depth of 150 feet to a maximum depth of 1200 feet. Flow rates vary from 1,800 to 4,000 gallons per minute.

Due to the age of wells in the various well fields, Reclamation has started a program of re-drilling wells (pending available funding) over the next 3 to 5 years. For Reclamation to meet the schedule of 6 to 8 wells per year, YAO needs the ability to order 4 -1/2” duel tube drill pipe in order to make it possible to complete deep set observation and test wells used in ground water studies. This will provide the information needed to drill and complete the necessary production well in a timely manner.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Reclamation is standardizing its well designs and drilling as much as practical in the Yuma area.

Reclamation’s current drainage wells are approaching the end of their useful life or are experiencing reduced pumping capacity due to various existing conditions (i.e., collapsed well, damaged screens, iron bacteria, etc.). Reclamation needs the ability to drill smaller diameter wells at deeper depth to obtain soil and water quality samples for production well planning and budgeting. It is necessary to use duel tube drill pipe to decrease the air pressure while avoiding heaving sands under shallow water conditions. Reclamation has two goals in mind, First is to remove shallow nuisance water and second is to find deeper fresh water with a lower TDS. The lower TDS water can be returned to the Colorado river to aid in drought conditions.
