About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) memorandum from NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to the University of Alabama (UA), dated July 1, 2026, detailing work under the In-Space Manufacturing (ISM-ASTRO) project's REGLINK task. The work focuses on understanding how regolith simulant characteristics influence Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) processing behavior and final material properties. UA is identified as the only CFSP partner institution equipped with the required AFSD systems and regolith-simulant expertise, and work will be performed under NASA's current CFSP membership.

The SOW specifies three primary objectives: quantify process-structure-property relationships for regolith-modified AFSD materials; define processing windows for AFSD using regolith simulant particulates; and provide material property data, microstructural analysis, and design recommendations to ISM-ASTRO. UA's scope of work includes seven tasks: preparing and classifying regolith simulant feedstock for AFSD compatibility; executing AFSD trials across a defined parameter matrix; producing AFSD test coupons for mechanical and microstructural evaluation; conducting SEM, XRD, XCT, and microscopy analysis; correlating simulant grain size, morphology, and chemistry with AFSD layer quality; participating in monthly CFSP technical-interchange meetings; and delivering a consolidated technical report. Deliverables include monthly progress updates, processing logs and AFSD parameter tables, mechanical property datasets, microstructure analysis packages, and a final REGLINK technical report in PDF format. Performance begins upon PR award and is expected to complete by Fall 2026. The NASA MSFC point of contact is Fredrick N. Michael, Ph.D., Structural Materials (EM32), 256.861.6455, fredrick.n.michael@nasa.gov.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Background The In-Space Manufacturing (ISM-ASTRO) project includes REGLINK, a task focused on understanding how regolith simulant characteristics influence Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) processing behavior and final material properties.

UA is the only CFSP partner institution equipped with the required AFSD systems and regolith-simulant expertise. Work will be carried out under NASA’s current CFSP membership.

2. Objectives The objective of this effort is to:

Quantify process–structure–property relationships for regolith-modified AFSD materials;

Define processing windows for AFSD using regolith simulant particulates;

Provide material property data, microstructural analysis, and design recommendations to

ISM-ASTRO.

3. Scope of Work

UA shall perform the following tasks:

1. Prepare and classify regolith simulant feedstock for AFSD compatibility.

2. Execute AFSD trials across a defined parameter matrix.

3. Produce AFSD test coupons for mechanical and microstructural evaluation.

4. Conduct SEM, XRD, XCT, and microscopy analysis of processed materials.

5. Correlate simulant grain size, morphology, and chemistry with AFSD layer quality.

6. Participate in CFSP monthly technical-interchange meetings and provide updates to NASA.

7. Deliver a consolidated technical report summarizing results.

4. Deliverables Monthly progress updates via CFSP T.I. meeting structure Processing logs and AFSD parameter tables Mechanical property datasets Microstructure analysis package (SEM/XRD/XCT) Final REGLINK technical report (PDF)

5. Period of Performance Execution begins upon PR award and is expected to complete by Fall 2026.
