About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details a project for designing, fabricating, and installing nine internally lit wayside panels within the Discovery Route section of Mammoth Cave National Park. The project objectives include improving wayside readability, enhancing visitor experience, and increasing accessibility for all visitors, particularly those with visual impairments. The exhibits must be durable, well-lit, and suitable for the cave's environmental conditions.
Key requirements include developing designs for panels measuring eight 36"x24" and one 48"x24" panel, ensuring compatibility with existing mounts and electrical infrastructure. The contractor must manually transport materials through 65 stairs and a 0.75-mile roundtrip to installation sites, remove existing panels, and install new lit panels. A licensed Kentucky electrician must perform electrical work, using 110V waterproof connectors. The project includes a comprehensive quality assurance process, with inspections throughout design and installation. The contractor will provide a one-year warranty covering all workmanship and materials, and must comply with OSHA, EPA, and Mammoth Cave National Park environmental regulations.

Scope of Work (SOW) For
Design, Fabrication, and Installation of Back Lit Waysides in the Cave Systems of Mammoth Cave National Park
Project Overview:
This project involves the design, fabrication, removal, and installation of nine (9) internally lit wayside panels within the Discovery Route section of the cave at Mammoth Cave National Park. The goal is to enhance readability and improve the visitor experience by providing clear illuminated interpretive information that is easily accessible even in the low-light conditions of the caves. The Contractor must design the new panels to be compatible with the existing mounts.
Project Location:
Mammoth Cave National Park, Mammoth Cave, KY 42259.
Project Objectives:
Improve the readability of waysides in the cave systems.
Enhance visitor experience by providing clear and visible interpretive information.
Increase accessibility for all visitors, including those with visual impairments.
Project Goals:
Ensure the new waysides are durable, well-lit, require minimal maintenance, and can withstand the environmental conditions in the cave.
Minimize environmental impact on the cave ecosystem.
Scope of Work:
Develop designs for nine (9) wayside panels featuring internal lighting.
o Approximate measurements for the wayside enclosures: eight (8) panels of 36 in x 24 in, and one (1) panel of 48 in x 24 in. (the Contractor is responsible for obtaining their own precise measurements).
o Designs must be suitable for the cave environment.
Ensure the designs fit seamlessly with the existing mounts. The Contractor must design the new panels to be compatible with the existing mounts.
Remove the existing panels and install the new lit panels using the existing electrical infrastructure. Consultation with the park’s electrician must be coordinated before any electrical work commences. The park’s electrician must oversee all electrical work.
o The Contractor must remove the existing wayside panels and properly dispose of them in accordance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and guidelines, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards and requirements set forth by Mammoth Cave National Park.
o All electrical connections must be suitable for a 110V power supply with waterproof connectors to ensure durability and safety within the damp cave environment.
o Installation must be performed by an electrician licensed in KY, and the proposal must include the electrician's credentials and license number.
The Contractor shall transport all materials manually to the cave, navigate a flight of 65 stairs, and walk a .75-mile roundtrip to the installation sites.
Once awarded, the Contractor must conduct a site visit to obtain precise measurements of the waysides and to become familiar with the conditions where the work will be conducted.
Required Submittals:
Contact listing: The Contractor must submit a list of key contacts involved in the project. This list should include the names, titles, and contact information for individuals such as the project superintendent, project manager, etc.
Design and Specifications:
o Provide detailed design plans for the signs, including dimensions and materials.
o Include specifications for the internal lighting systems, ensuring they are suitable for a high-humidity cave environment.
o Detail the frames, including materials and compatibility with the existing infrastructure.
o All electrical plans must be inspected and approved by the park’s electrician before procuring materials or proceeding with work.
Installation Plan:
o Include logistical details for transporting materials to the site and ensuring safe and efficient installation within the cave.
Proposed schedule for the entire project, detailing key milestones, deadlines, and the timeline for each phase of the project including design, fabrication, removal, and installation.
Quality Assurance:
A comprehensive QA process will be implemented to ensure high standards for the installation of the lit wayside panels. This includes:
A pre-construction meeting to review specifications and establish communication protocols.
Materials will be inspected upon delivery to ensure they meet requirements.
Regular inspections will be conducted during fabrication and installation to ensure workmanship adheres to design plans.
Electrical systems will be inspected before, during, and after installation to ensure suitability for a
110V power supply with waterproof connectors, performed by a licensed electrician.
Detailed inspections during installation will ensure proper alignment, secure mounting, and compliance with safety standards.
A final inspection will test all lighting systems for full functionality and compliance with regulations.
Government Furnished Materials:
The Government will not provide any materials for this project.
Contractor Provided Materials and Services:
The Contractor shall provide all labor, materials, tools, equipment, and services necessary for the successful completion of this project.
Contractor Responsibilities:
The Contractor is responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
The Contractor must ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner and adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.

o Upon completion of the project, the Contractor must restore the site to its original condition, including the removal of all equipment, materials, and waste.
Restroom Facilities:
There are no restrooms available within the cave for Contractor use. Contractors must plan accordingly for restroom facilities outside the cave.
Acceptance Criteria:
All waysides must be installed and operational as per design specifications. Successful completion of initial maintenance checks is required to ensure functionality and durability.
Warranty:
Wayside exhibits enhance the resident and visitor experience by providing clear and informative wayfinding signs and maps. To ensure the highest quality and reliability, the Contractor must provide a warranty for a period of one (1) year covering all aspects of workmanship and materials. This warranty includes electrical components, materials, parts, and the wayside panels. Any defects or failures within this period must be promptly addressed and rectified by the Contractor at no additional cost to the Government.
