About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a CDS 6200 Pyroprobe Analyzer required by the Planetary Environments Laboratory (PEL) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

The CDS 6200 Pyroprobe Analyzer is a critical instrument needed to support the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite on the Mars Curiosity rover, as well as to inform future mission concepts such as for the New Frontiers and Flagship class programs. The pyroprobe will be used to develop pyrolysis methods for planetary sampling and to characterize organic compounds, which aligns with key objectives outlined in NASA's Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Strategy. The CDS 6200 Pyroprobe provides evolved gas analysis, thermal desorption, and direct pyrolysis capabilities that are compatible with the SAM instrument. It includes an autosampler module for unattended analysis of up to 48 samples.

NASA's Shared Services Center intends to issue a sole source contract to CDS Analytical, the manufacturer of the CDS 6200 Pyroprobe, under the authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1)(i). Interested organizations may submit their capabilities in writing by 9/11/2024 for the government's consideration of a competitive procurement.

STATEMENT OF WORK

CDS 6200 Pyroprobe Analyzer Planetary Environments Laboratory

August 2024

1. Objective/Requirements The Planetary Environments Laboratory, PEL (Code 699), studies the chemistry and astrobiology of the atmospheres and surfaces of planetary bodies and is a world-class developer of flight instrumentation (e.g., mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, pyrolysis) for the analysis of planetary environments. The PEL developed the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite onboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover that has been exploring Mars since 2012. Part of the SAM’s capability is to be able to pyrolyze Mars samples into volatiles prior to analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The acquisition of this CDS 6200 Pyroprobe Analyzer is critical to aid in optimizing SAM analytical capabilities and inform on surface operations. This pyroprobe is the only analytical instrument on the market that has a SAM-like configuration in its gas flow path and cryotrapping capability. The results provided by the CDS 6200 Pyroprobe will be used as critical mission support for SAM. This instrument will also be used to support the development of science objectives for future mission concepts, such as for New Frontiers 5 and 6, or Flagship class missions including Enceladus Orbilander. Benchtop pyrolysis methods developed on the CDS 6200 Pyroprobe can be used to support in situ planetary sampling and help address questions such as those outlined in the NASA’s “Origins, Worlds, and Life: A Decadal Strategy for Planetary Science and Astrobiology 2023-2032” (page 13-16), including “Determine the chemical composition and structural characteristics of organic compounds in both Europa’s and Enceladus’ oceans to understand organic synthesis,” and “Characterize organic molecules present on Mars for determination of type, distribution, and source of organic materials to understand organic synthesis there”. In addition, the CDS 6200 Pyroprobe will be used to support many other research projects in PEL funded through NASA ROSES Programs, such as Habitable Worlds, Participating Scientist Program, and Exobiology.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs The CDS 6200 Pyroprobe contains a pyrolysis oven capable of evolved gas analysis and an analytical trap to enable collecting analytes using slow rate pyrolysis for gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The built-in trap also expands the capability to use a reactant gas and perform thermal desorption on sorbent tubes or larger samples. The 6200 also permits direct pyrolysis to the GC in GC carrier gas. The 6200 is equipped with Drop-In-Sample-Chamber (DISC) technology with easy sample loading and an Autosampler module for analyzing up to 48 samples unattended. The CDS 6200 Pyroprobe also comes with a stand-alone cryomill that can be used to crush sediment and regolith sample up to <8m at cryotemperatures (with liquid nitrogen).

The pyroprobe analyzer will have the following requirements:

1) The system will be delivered to the Planetary Environment Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and installed by the field technician.

2) The technician shall perform the necessary work to set up the system and connect it to the electrical and gas supplies in the laboratory.

3) The system will have a built-in analytical trap that supports PY-TRAP-GC and adds reactant gas capability (i.e., chemical ionization or hydropyrolysis).

4) The system will have a temperature control calibrated and programmable from ambient to 1300°C with ± 0.1°C accuracy.

5) The system will be compatibility with standard split/splitless injection port module (no Helium Saver Option).

6) An autosampler module which provides reproducible, unattended automated analyses of 48 samples.

7) The suite must come with a software license for data analysis, the most recent Polymer Pyrolysis GC/MS Library - for polymer characterization and identification, and an Additive/Biofuel Library for the characterization and identification of very complex matrices.

8) The necessary mass spectrometer connector to operate the system.

9) Installation must be included and performed in a timely manner.

10) Familiarization training is required to train potential users of the instrument suite.

11) A one-year warranty is required.

12) The vendor must have a nationally recognized expertise with pyroprobe pyrolyzer design and an established history of instrument support and service.

3. Deliverables and delivery schedule CDS Analytical shall deliver a complete Pyroprobe® 6200 Pyrolyzer (pyroprobe pyrolyzer) and with current CDS 6000 Series Autosampler Module.

CDS Analytical shall deliver 1 software package, 1 copy protection keys, accessory and installation component packs.

Electronic manuals, documentation, and copies of the supporting software shall be delivered within 180 calendar days after the award.

The system shall be installed, calibrated, and certified by a trained CDS Analytical technician.

The technician shall train lab members in instrument operation and sample analysis during installation for two additional days after installation.

CDS Analytical shall provide and a 1-year warranty starting on the completion date of the installation followed by 2-year service agreement.
