About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) that provides details on a membership opportunity with the Center for Accelerated Real-Time Analytics (CARTA), a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) program at the University of Miami.
The primary objective is to utilize blockchain technology to enhance the security, integrity, trustworthiness, and reliability of data within Earth Systems Digital Twins (ESDTs). Key benefits include a decentralized and immutable ledger to prevent data tampering, increased resilience against cyber-attacks through a decentralized architecture, and automated data access control through smart contracts. The period of performance is August 1, 2024 to May 31, 2026, with the place of performance at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

STATEMENT OF WORK (Sample)
1. Objective/Requirements Membership to the Center for Accelerated Reat-Time Analytics (CARTA) which is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) program at the University of Miami. CARTA will provide unique opportunities to research the application of blockchains capabilities as applied to Earth Science applications. In addition, the membership enables access to other research being funded by all Government and Industry members of the I/UCRC.
2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs The primary aim of this proposal is to use distributed ledger technology (DLT) for data security and integrity within Earth Systems digital twins (ESDTs). The objectives are follows:
Blockchain technology enhances the security, integrity, trustworthiness, and reliability of the data in Earth Systems Digital Twins (ESDTs). By providing a decentralized and immutable ledger, it ensures that data cannot be altered or tampered with, offering a transparent and verifiable record of environmental conditions and changes. This capability is crucial for accurate modeling and simulation in ESDTs, enabling more precise predictions and informed decision-making for environmental management and policy development, safeguarding digital twin integrity.
Decentralized architecture eliminates single points of failure, increasing resilience against cyber-attacks. This blockchain solution not only mitigates the risk of system-wide failures but also complicates the efforts of attackers, as they must breach multiple points to cause significant damage.
Smart contracts-based rule-based access control automates data access and updates, allowing only authorized operations. This ensures that only authorized operations are executed, enhancing the security and integrity of the system by preventing unauthorized access or modifications.
Transparency and auditability of blockchain enable verification of data authenticity and provenance. This not only enables stakeholders to trace the origin and history of data, ensuring its authenticity and provenance but also enhances trust in the system by making the data’s journey transparent and accountable to all participants.
