About this file

This statement of work outlines requirements for two systems to support a Terahertz Heterodyne Spectrometer project. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center is seeking one integrated receiver configuration and one integrated amplifier/multiplier chain between 400-550 GHz from Virginia Diodes Inc. The period of performance is October 28, 2023 through December 15, 2023. The integrated receiver must have a noise temperature between 4,000-5,000 K, support RF and LO inputs within specified ranges and frequencies, and output an IF of 23 GHz ± 2 GHz while consuming less than 700 mA at +5.5V. The amplifier/multiplier chain must provide a minimum output power of 5 dBm across 400-550 GHz with WR1.9 flange and input drive between 11.11-15.27 GHz. Both systems aim to detect water and its isotopes in lunar regolith and must be delivered by Virginia Diodes Inc. within the scheduled time or with timely notification of challenges.

STATEMENT OF WORK FORMAT

THSiRU ‐ Terahertz Heterodyne Spectrometer

For In‐Situ Resource Utilization Project PI: Dr. Berhanu Bulcha/ GSFC Code 555

Contract to: Virginia Diodes Inc.

PR: 4200854147

Period of performance: October 28, 2023 – Dec 15, 2023 Delivery Address:

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Building 33, Room F203 8800 Greenbelt Rd, Greenbelt, MD 20771

Background THSiRU, Terahertz Heterodyne Spectrometer for In Situ Resource Utilization, is a two‐ year technology development project. This project aims to mature Terahertz (THz) instruments for future lunar missions, including the Artemis program. THSiRU shall develop a compact and power‐efficient laser‐desorption heterodyne spectrometer to detect H2O, OH and/or HDO trapped in the lunar regolith. The science objectives for THSiRU are listed below:

1. Determine if the Moon’s regolith and exosphere are hydrated by detection or non‐detection of pure rotational transitions of H2O at 2.64 THz, OH at 2.51 THz, and HDO at 2.60 THz.

2. Discriminate between models of indigenous or exogenous water.

3. Evaluate the total volatile and solid phase water budgets.

Scope

The THSiRU core system contains a spectrometer to detect volatiles from the lunar subsurface. The spectral line will be digitized using a spectrometer for nearly a real‐time post‐process analysis. Virginia Diodes will provide two systems, [1] Receiver system and [2] Amplifier Multiplier Chain (AMC), and their requirements are listed below.
