About this file
This statement of work outlines thermal conductivity testing requirements for composite material coupons to be conducted by Kratos Defense for the Thermoplastics Development for Exploration Applications project. Kratos Defense will machine composite coupons measuring approximately 1.1" x 1.1" x 0.6" provided by the project team to a diameter of 1.0" and thickness of 0.5" compatible with testing apparatus. Thermal conductivity measurements will then be performed on six coupons each of three composite systems - Toray TC1200 PEEK matrix with AS4 fiber, Toray TC1225 PAEK matrix with T700 fiber, and 3D printed PAEK matrix with AS4 fiber - over a temperature range from ambient to 160 degrees C. Kratos Defense will provide raw measurement data, regression fitting of thermal conductivity versus temperature for each material system, and biweekly status updates to the project team located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. All testing and data transfer must be completed within three months of coupon and payment receipt.

TDEA Kratos Thermal SOW (June 2023)
Task: TDEA Kratos Thermal Conductivity Testing
Task Order:
Task Modification: 0
Summary/Background
The Thermoplastics Development for Exploration Applications (TDEA) project seeks to advance thermoplastic composite material and manufacturing technologies, including thermoplastic welding. Modelling the welding process requires thermal conductivity data for the composites of interest. TDEA has selected Kratos Defense for thermal conductivity measurements on all composite coupons with fibers oriented along the axis of heat transfer.
Requirements
The TDEA team at Goddard Space Flight Center has developed a test plan for coupon machining and thermal conductivity measurement to be conducted at Kratos Defense. TDEA will provide Kratos with rectangular coupon “blanks” of approximate dimensions 1.1” × 1.1” × 0.6” (fibers oriented along 0.6” axis), to be machined by Kratos to 1.0” diameter round × 0.5” thick compatible with the testing apparatus prior to thermal conductivity measurement. The following coupon sets are to be measured over the temperature range spanning ambient temperature (approx. 25 °C) to 160 °C:
6 of: Toray TC1200 PEEK matrix / AS4 fiber 6 of: Toray TC1225 PAEK matrix / T700 fiber 6 of: 3D printed PAEK matrix / AS4 fiber
Deliverables
Kratos Defense shall:
(1) Machine coupon blanks from 1.1” × 1.1” × 0.6” rectangular, as delivered, to dimensions compatible with the testing apparatus:
nominally 1.0” diameter round × 0.5” thick.

(2) Perform thermal conductivity measurements via comparative rod method based on ASTM E1225. Coupons shall be measured over the temperature range spanning ambient temperature (approx. 25 °C) to 160 °C, recording at least 4 evenly spaced temperature points over this range.
(3) Perform regression fitting of the measured data, to determine an average thermal conductivity vs. temperature for each of the 3 material systems submitted.
(4) Provide the TDEA project team with periodic status updates (at least once every two weeks) following receipt of coupons. Some details regarding the test plan may be modified or refined following discussion of early tests.
(5) Transfer testing data (raw data points and regression fitting) to a shared drive that will be created for file exchange between Kratos Defense and the TDEA project team.
Testing and data transfer shall be completed within 3 months following receipt of coupons and payment.
Period of Performance
Beginning June 2023, ending 3 months from receipt of coupons and payment.
Travel / ODC Requirements
None.
