STATEMENT OF WORK FORMAT

Liquid cryogen-free bolometer detector for the Bruker 125HR Fourier Transform Interferometer in the Optical Components Laboratory

PR: _____________________

Note: Only use the sections that are applicable to your service procurement.

Background

The Optical Components Laboratory (Code 551) at NASA GSFC is home to a workhouse Fourier Transform Interferometer (FTIR), the Bruker 125HR, which is used often by flight projects at NASA for critical optical measurements.

The FTIR operates over an extremely broad band of optical wavelengths, from visible through submillimeter, and uses a variety of detector accessories each sensitive to a different wavelength range. The detector accessory currently in use for the far-infrared and submillimeter range is a bolometer detector that must be cooled by liquid helium in order to function. The wavelength range covered by the bolometer detector is in high demand by flight projects using the Bruker

125HR.

During bolometer operation, the liquid helium is consumed during detector operation and is not recovered. There is currently a global shortage of liquid helium, which is a nonrenewable resource. As a result, helium prices continue to increase.

Scope

Purchase a new liquid cryogen-free bolometer system for the Bruker 125HR. This purchase will allow regular operation of the FTIR in the far-infrared and submillimeter wavelength ranges without the need for costly consumable helium.
