About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a federal contract opportunity. The SOW describes a requirement for a Contractor to design and deliver glass bioreactor vessels with PTFE lids that can hold less than 200 mL of volume, optimally around 100 mL, for use with the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecology (SHIME) system operated by researchers at the ERRC. The total quantity required is 11 bioreactors.
The related federal contract opportunity, Solicitation Number 12305B24Q0144, is seeking commercial services to provide the required bioreactors and lids. This is an unrestricted full and open competition with a NAICS code of 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing). The agency issuing the solicitation is the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Northeast Area.

STATEMENT OF WORK
BACKGROUND
The Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecology (SHIME®) system is an in vitro computer controlled bioreactor system designed to mimic the physiological conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and culture the gut microbiota. The SHIME® is specifically designed to culture the regionally distinct microbial communities by mimicking the ascending, transverse, and descending colon regions which are connected and provided food moved sequentially through the system thus recapitulating the longitudinal progression of ingested food through the GIT. Due to the complexity of this system and expertise and training required for its operation there are a limited number of SHIME® systems world-wide, and they are solely produced, manufactured, and sold by the proprietary company.
Researchers at the ERRC operate a Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecology (SHIME) system. The SHIME® system relies on the use of glass bioreactors and matching lids for operation, which are currently designed to hold a volume from 250mL up to 3L glass vessels for the SHIME®, REQUIREMENT
Researchers require a Contractor to design and deliver glass bioreactor vessels with PTFE lids that can hold (less than)< 200 mL of volume, optimally a volume around 100 mL for use with their SHIME® equipment.
Quantity of 11 (eleven) are required
· Must hold a working volume less than <200 mL, optimally a volume around 100 mL
· Glass water bioreactors must have functioning double layered water jacket compatible with the circulating water bath and must be capable of maintaining agitation using a magnetic stirrer.
· Lids must be PTFE appropriate fitting sizes on the lids that are compatible with the SHIME® pH probes and tubing used to feed the system, ARS scientists will discuss the requirements for the new glass bioreactors and matching lids with the Contractor to ensure that the new bioreactors are the appropriate size and have the necessary components.
Contractor will work with their engineers to develop a model, or design, of the new glass bioreactors and lids, with all the appropriate fittings and requirements as dictated by ARS scientists.
Contractor will produce the glass bioreactors and check that they are compatible with the SHIME® system.
