Project Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Lathe
General Information
1.0 Scope of Work
The Forest Service (FS) Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) Research Facilities Engineering (RFE) Department is requesting the acquisition of a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) metal lathe to support the fabrication and repair of unique and complex equipment. The RFE is responsible for fabricating and maintaining complex scientific research equipment, which regularly requires the ability to design and manufacture complex parts. The CNC Lathe must be capable of handling material at least 24” in length, with a material swing over bed of at least 12”. This machine will also have an automatic tool changer, to facilitate the repeatable manufacture of complex parts. It must have a variable speed spindle. The machine must be 3-phase electrical compatible. The machine must also meet lockout/tagout safety standards. These capacities and capabilities are necessary for the RFE to fabricate scientific fixtures and equipment efficiently and safely.
2.0 Background
Acquiring a CNC lathe will position the RFE to provide superior machining and fabrication abilities to better serve the FS, USGS, and all tenants of the FPL. The ability to utilize the computer numerical control (CNC) manufacturing method when turning machine parts will allow the RFE machinists to produce complex parts with exacting precision, on a repeatable basis. The benefits of this are reduced downtime and increased efficiency for the greater FPL.
