About this file
This is a Statement of Work for a USDA procurement to purchase 60 healthy, 5-week-old Cesarean derived, colostrum deprived (CDCD) piglets for vaccine efficacy research. The piglets must be free of antibody reactivity to and colonization with Streptococcus suis and Glaesserella parasuis, and delivery is required on or near July 20th, 2026 to the USDA National Center for Animal Health (NCAH). The procurement is issued by the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service under solicitation number 1232SA26Q0510.
The underlying research project aims to evaluate experimental vaccines for preventing systemic disease caused by S. suis and G. parasuis using various vaccine platforms including modified live vaccines, avirulent live vaccines, mRNA vaccines, subunit vaccines, and bacterin vaccines, administered either parenterally or mucosally. The Statement of Work indicates this procurement supports a critical need, as S. suis is identified as the number one bacterial risk for swine and currently lacks commercially available vaccines in the U.S., while G. parasuis causes significant economic losses estimated at $8.60 per head with inadequate heterologous protection from existing vaccines. The document references government-furnished support, data, and facilities but does not provide specific details in the sections marked for insertion.

Project Assessment of vaccines for S. suis and G. parasuis
General Information
1.0 Scope of Work
The objective of this protocol is to evaluate the efficacy of experimental vaccines for preventing systemic disease caused by Streptococcus suis and Glaesserella parasuis. This study may evaluate different platforms of vaccines including modified live vaccines, avirulent live vaccines, mRNA vaccines, subunit vaccines, or bacterin vaccines (inactivated). Vaccines may be administered parenterally or mucosally. Efficacy of vaccination will be evaluated by challenge with virulent S. suis or G. parasuis.
2.0 Background
Streptococcus suis is the number one bacterial risk for swine as determined by the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC). Currently there are no commercially available S. suis vaccines in the U.S. and the use of autogenous vaccines needs to be further refined. G. parasuis costs swine producers an estimated $8.60 per head and current commercially available vaccines do not provide good heterologous protection. These studies will contribute to more efficacious vaccines and vaccination strategies for S. suis and G. parasuis filling a critical gap in the control of these pathogens.
Contractor Requirements
3.0 Technical Requirements / Tasks
