About this file

This statement of work outlines destructive testing requirements for a submerged arc groove weld on a 24-inch diameter, 8-inch thick steel shaft section at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The contractor will manufacture and test specimens from the shaft weld according to AWS B4.0 standards. Required testing includes tensile, CVN, and bend tests of the weld, heat affected zone, and base metal at various temperatures. The contractor must provide written test reports and return excess materials and specimens to the shipyard within 364 days of award. Testing will take place at the contractor's facility.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Background: Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s (NNSY) Welding Engineering Division performs welding procedure qualifications to support the Navy with new welding equipment and processes. These procedure qualifications require destructive testing to validate mechanical properties and NNSY does not have the equipment or personnel to support such testing. NNSY currently has a section of weld testing on a shaft approximately 24” in diameter and 8” thick that will require sectioning and machining of various destructive test specimens.

2. Scope:

2.1. The objective of this task is to have the vendor manufacture and test specimens from (1) MIL-S-23284 Class 1 shaft with a 1” deep, 360° submerged arc groove weld.

2.2. Manufacturing and testing shall be done to AWS B4.0 standards unless otherwise noted below.

3. Deliverables:

3.1. Written destructive test reports on all testing shall be provided back to NNSY’s Welding Engineering Division.

3.2. Excess material and all test pieces shall be returned to the following address:

Norfolk Naval Shipyard Bldg. 276 Beatty Street Portsmouth, VA 23709

4. Period of performance: 364 days from date of award.

5. Place of Performance: Contractor’s facility

6. C412 Buyer: input applicable NNSY Contract Verbiage
