SOW Attachment 1:
Contaminants for Gauge Cleaning Tests
Revision 4. Updated 7 March 2022
Compounds 1-4 are referenced in NASA solvent-cleaning evaluation reports.1 Highlighted compounds have been used in previous tests for Navy Metrology R&D projects.
1. Mineral Oil. Concord used CID Mineral Oil, USP A0A053740, obtained from Mallinckrodt as product #6358, CAS #8012-95-1. Since that time, Mallinckrodt merged with Baker and became Mallinckrodt-Baker for a time, but Baker was acquired by Avantor. Though they keep the same product number, the minimum quantity available through Avantor is a 12-pack of 500mL bottles. Used Acros Organics mineral oil for standard reference solutions (now Thermo Scientific).
2. MIL-PRF-5606H (was MIL-H-5606). Current revision is MIL-PRF-5606J, Hydraulic Fluid, Petroleum Base;
Aircraft, Missile, and Ordnance, 5 March 2018, is listed as “Inactive for new design after 29 March 1996. For new designs, use MIL-PRF-87257 or MIL-PRF-83282.”
Royco 756 meets the requirements of MIL-PRF-5606.
Aeroshell 41 Hydraulic Fluid meets MIL-PRF-5606 and is available in quarts at Aircraft Spruce for $10.85:
https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/stpages/aeroshell_bflu_09-27000-QT.php?clickkey=7941 .
3. MIL-PRF-83282D (was MIL-H-83282). MIL-PRF 83282D identifies the oil as: “Hydraulic Fluid, Fire Resistant, Synthetic Hydrocarbon Base.” It is in the Qualified Products Database (QPD); see Notice 1 for additional information.
From WebFLIS for quart size: NSN: 9150-00-149-7431; Item Name: Hydraulic Fluid, Fire Resistant. CAGE 07950 is Chemtura Corp, DBA Anderol, (Royco’s MSDS lists Anderol as the manufacturer.) MSDS was obtained using the NSN on HMIRS website as there were no links on WebFLIS.
Royco 782 meets the requirements of MIL-PRF-83282. Anderol was the manufacturer of Royco 782, but they transferred that material to Boeing Distribution Services in 2020. Boeing Distribution may have samples. If not, quarts are available for $15.50 from Aircraft Spruce:

NSN (1 qt): 9150-01-548-6612
4. Sebacate. Listed as "di-2-ethyl hexyl sebacate, ester; gauge calibration fluid."1
More properly: Decanedioic acid, di(2-ethylhexyl) ester; CAS Reg. No. 122-62-3. Other names: Di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, Sebacic acid di(2-ethylhexyl) ester, ‘Dioctyl’ sebacate
Ruska 2485 Hydraulic Piston Gauge Users Manual (Dec 2010) lists both Spinesstic 22 oil and dioctyl sebacate as the fluid types available for this model2. See note (2) under Other, below.
Fluke identifies HallStar Company as the manufacturer of Sebacate for the Model 2485 and provides a copy of the MSDS for HallStar’s Monoplex DOS (Di-2-ethylhexyl Sebacate) on their website3.
In February 2013, HallStar Company (supplies Fluke/Ruska) provided a free standard sample of 0.5L.
(HallStar Company, Chicago, IL Customer Service: 1.877.427.4255; Sales Rep-Scott Tinker: 1.310.488.0188)
1 NASA WSTF-IR-95-0048, Investigative Report: Evaluation of Solvent Alternatives to Trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFC-113) for Cleaning of Gauges and Precision Instruments, January 30, 1995. NASA also used Krytox® 240AC.

5. Spinesstic 22. Listed as "Petroleum Lubricating Oil," referenced as "common gauge calibration oil." This was formerly also used with the Ruska 2485 Hydraulic Piston Gauge calibrator, but is no longer available.
ExxonMobil states that Spinesstic oils have been discontinued (Ref.: Info Sheet). A Wallover Lubricants Cross Reference Chart and Petroleum Service Company both list Mobil Velocite 10 as equivalent to Exxon Spinesstic 22.
I don’t find any Mobil Velocite 10 in smaller containers than 1 gallon; most places have 5 gal pails.
