STATEMENT OF WORK
BACKGROUND:
The Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance (HCA), University of Hawaii, is a cooperative collaboration of conservation leaders representing nineteen government, education, and non-profit organizations. Collectively we are responsible for managing the biodiversity of Hawai‘i’s lands and waters.
SCOPE OF WORK:
Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center (PIERC) has been a charter member of the HCA since its formation in 1988, and has benefitted greatly by having a seat at the table during discussions of conservation and resource management plans between an assemblage of scientists, regulators, landowners, cultural organizations and other groups working on ecology and the protection of Hawaiian biodiversity. The group includes other DOI agencies (FWS, NPS), plus other federal agencies working from the mountain tops (USFS, NRCS) to the deep sea (NOAA). Members also include numerous state agencies and NGOs.
More information on HCA can be found at http://hawaiiconservation.org/
USGS membership in HCA has resulted in a rich exchange of information whereby research needs and funding opportunities are articulated by some members and scientific results of USGS research are put to use. Meetings are typically attended by local agency leaders, allowing for effective discussions and innovative decisions. Membership to this organization and a seat at the table plays a major role in accomplishing PIERC’s mission to work with others to provide scientific understanding and technologies to support and implement sound management and conservation of our Nation’s biological resources occurring in Hawaii and other Pacific Island locations.
