About this file
This is a Statement of Work for laboratory services requested by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Science Center, Seattle Field Office. The USGS seeks a laboratory vendor to provide support services for the preparation and processing of wood samples collected from paleoseismological and landslide studies in the Pacific Northwest. The laboratory will be responsible for cutting, mounting, and sanding wood samples for tree ring analyses; sectioning and mounting samples for laser ablation analysis; dissecting individual rings; and preparing and analyzing samples for radiocarbon and oxygen isotope analysis. The scope includes work on up to 20 tree samples (core or slabs containing ring series of hundreds of rings) to determine precise ages of past earthquakes and coseismically-triggered landslides using multi-proxy, cross-validated geochronologic processes.
The vendor's primary deliverables include finished wood samples, processed results reports, and archiving of finished samples at the selected laboratory for future reference. The laboratory will also collaborate with the USGS Pacific Northwest Project Chief in field sample collection efforts. Work will be performed at the vendor's facility with a base year of performance from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027, and one option year from September 1, 2027, to August 31, 2028. The statement does not include response dates, award dates, pricing terms, or set-asides.

STATEMENT OF WORK
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
A. Introduction and Background The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Science Center, Seattle Field Office (SFO), requests laboratory services for tree ring samples collected from paleoseismological and landslide studies in the Pacific Northwest. Paleoseismologists and geologists conduct studies of active fault zones and landslides throughout the Pacific Northwest. An integral part of these studies are tree ring analyses to determine precise ages of past earthquakes and coseismically-triggered landslides. The USGS does not have the in-house capabilities to provide proper sample collection, preparation, processing, and final analysis.
C. Scope The purpose of the laboratory work is to provide support services and the preparation and processing of wood samples for tree ring and isotope analyses. We anticipate needing analyses on up to 20 tree samples (core or slabs containing ring series of hundreds of rings). The criteria for acceptance of services shall be finished wood preparation, dissection of rings, radiocarbon and isotope analyses, and preparation and analysis of individual growth increments and analysis results for cross-dating analysis. The methods now also use oxygen isotopes as a means for cross-dating samples in addition to radiocarbon and traditional dendrochrologic techniques, resulting in a multi-proxy, cross-validated geochronologic process.
II. WORK REQUIREMENTS
A. Technical Requirements Specific work requirements include cutting, mounting, and sanding of wood samples for tree ring analyses, sectioning and mounting samples for laser ablation analysis, dissection of individual rings, and preparation, analysis of samples for radiocarbon and oxygen isotope analysis, and cross dating analysis.
B. Deliverables The lab will work with the PNW Project Chief of the Earthquake Science Center. The lab will help collect samples in the field, prepare and analyze samples submitted by USGS and collaborating geoscientists, and provide finished wood samples and a report of processed results. Finished samples will be archived at the selected lab for future reference.
III. SUPPORTING INFORMATION
A. Place of Performance Preparation and analyses will be performed at vendor’s facility.
B. Period of Performance: Base year: 09/01/2026 to 08/31/2027
Option year 1: 09/01/2027 to 08/31/2028
