Statement of Requirements

1630nm ECDL Lasers - ZDR

BACKGROUND:

The Material Measurement Laboratory’s Chemical Sciences Division Gas Sensing Metrology group has multiple ongoing projects that involve high resolution laser spectroscopy of atmospheric gases, such as water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane. The group typically employs cavity ringdown spectroscopy and photoacoustic spectroscopy in order to produce high quality spectral data products. In order to advance the measurement goals of the group, a high resolution, continuously and widely tunable laser source in the 1.6 μm wavelength region is required.

SPECIFICATIONS:

The Contractor shall provide two (2) ECDL lasers with the following minimum technical specifications:

1. A nominal tuning range of 1570nm to 1660nm, with minimum acceptable lower range of 1580nm.

2. Continuous, mode-hop free motored tuning over the entire tuning range

3. Laser linewidth <100 kHz at 5 μs

4. Output power of >30 mW

5. Absolute accuracy <150 pm

6. Relative accuracy <10 pm

7. Optical isolation: >60 dB

8. Fast current modulation (AC and DC coupled)

9. Included fiber collimator with >50% coupling efficiency

10. Attached fiber optic must be a PANDA PM fiber with narrow key FC/APC connectors with the slow axis aligned with the key

11. Integrated locking system, allowing top-of-fringe or side of fringe locking

12. Ability to tune laser and operate locking from front panel

13. Motor microstep of 0.5 pm or less in wavelength

14. Piezo step size of 5 kHz of less in optical frequency

15. USB or serial interface to PC

16. Continuous wave (CW) output

17. An operations manual for the laser and associated controller shall be included.

Warranty: 1 year standard warranty on laser diode. Contractor shall cover repair costs within this period, including diagnosis, labor and parts. Repair work may be performed at contractor’s location.

DELIVERY:

Delivery shall be FOB destination. The delivery date shall be eight (8) weeks from date of award.

Delivery shall be made to NIST Gaithersburg at 100 Bureau Dr, Building 221, MS 8320

Gaithersburg MD 20899, and shall occur during normal business hours defined as Monday through

Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm EST, except for federal holidays.

ACCCEPTANCE:

Final acceptance by the Government will be given after successful delivery, and demonstration of item specifications.

Schedule (Required Delivery Date/Period of Performance): 8 weeks from award

I. GENERAL INFORMATION

Safety: The Contractor employee shall be responsible for knowing and complying with commercial installation safety prevention regulations. Such regulations include, but are not limited to, general safety, fire prevention, and waste disposal.

Security: NIST is a restricted campus. An identification badge is required for access for entry into buildings and also is shown to the armed Security Police when entering the campus.

Identification Badges: Contractor employees shall comply with NIST identification and access requirements. The Contractor shall provide the name and citizenship information of employees for on-site visits to the NIST Technical Point of Contact (TPOC) prior to arrival. The TPOC will submit the name(s) and citizenship information to the NIST Office of Security in order for a given

Contractor employee to enter the NIST campus. The Contractor employee is responsible for absences due to missing or expired identification and access documents. Each Contractor employee shall wear a visible identification badge provided by the NIST Security Office.

Vehicle Registration: All Contractor employees must register their vehicles with the NIST

Security Office to gain access to the campus. A valid driver’s license, Government-furnished civilian ID (which in most cases can be a valid driver's license), proof of insurance and current registration must be presented to the NIST Security Office.
