STATEMENT OF NEED (SON)

1.0 TITLE

Brand Name or Equal Heidolph Tuttnauer Replacement Benchtop Autoclave for NIDDK

2.0 BACKGROUND

The Diabetes Molecular Genetics Section (DMGS) of the Phoenix Epidemiological Clinical

Research Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts molecular, genetic, and genomic research to identify genetic risk factors for obesity and diabetes.

Proper sterilization is necessary in a laboratory setting. Media, such as broth or agar plates, must be made in the autoclave to ensure sterility. An autoclave is also necessary to sterilize glassware and other labware to be used in experiments. Finally, any biohazardous wastes, such as bacterial or cell cultures and media, must be decontaminated/sterilized using an autoclave.

The DMGS section needs to acquire a large capacity benchtop autoclave. The current large autoclave is over 20 years old and has been unrepairable, and out of service since December 2023. Current building space allows for only a benchtop model. This autoclave is needed for preparing media, sterilizing lab ware, and decontaminating biohazardous wastes before disposal.
