STATEMENT OF NEED
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
NOAA Fisheries National Seafood Inspection Laboratory/Office of Sustainable Fisheries
Automated Nucleic Acid Extraction System
NF-FKF700-21-00981
PURPOSE: The National Seafood Inspection Laboratory has purchased an Illumina MiSeq gene sequencer. The preparation of samples for this equipment is extremely time consuming and labor intensive, with extremely specific hold, wash, and processing times to extract DNA from samples for sequence analyses. An automated nucleic acid extraction system will fully automate this process which will increase throughput, precision, and accuracy of the analyses thereby standardizing the results, as well decrease the labor cost involved.
SCOPE OR MISSION: NSIL intends to collaborate with the National Ocean Service and other National Marine Fisheries Service laboratories on source tracking for Vibrio species and Salmonella species using whole genome sequencing analyses, as well as other projects within NOAA for the identification of fish species, both for seafood economic fraud issues and research.
