About this file

The Statement of Need describes a detailed requirement for an automated weapons cleaning system for the Air Force, specifically designed to clean and maintain six different weapon systems (M240, M249, M4, M18, MK19, and M2). The system must feature a dual-tank configuration with ultrasonic cleaning and rinsing capabilities, include a high-frequency ultrasonic system with 2000 watts minimum power, temperature-controlled tanks (100-150F), and a comprehensive filtration system. Additional critical specifications include semi-automation with a precision-guided overhead gantry, pneumatic controls, touch-screen HMI, programmable cleaning cycles, safety features, and compatibility with California environmental regulations for cleaning solutions. The system must be constructed of corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel, have a minimum tank size of 50" x 25" x 12", provide a minimum 2-year warranty, be mobile on wheels, and include training materials for operators. The cleaning system is intended to efficiently remove carbon, copper, and other residues while minimizing damage to weapon components.

Statement of Need:

Our mission is to obtain an automated weapons cleaning system to save time and improve efficiency in the maintenance and repair of our weapons systems. To achieve this goal, we require a precision cleaning and rinsing system that can effectively clean and process parts with complex geometries and materials, specifically designed to accommodate the following weapons systems: M240, M249, M4, M18, MK19, and M2 The system should include:

1. Dual-Tank Configuration: A system with two separate tanks, one for ultrasonic cleaning and one for rinsing.

2. Ultrasonic Cleaning Capability: The ultrasonic cleaning tank should be equipped with a high-frequency ultrasonic system, capable of simultaneous operation at multiple frequencies, with a minimum power output of 2000 watts.

3. Temperature Control: Both tanks should have thermostatically controlled temperature control systems, with a minimum temperature range of 100°F to 150°F.

4. Filtration System: The ultrasonic cleaning tank should have a filtration system to remove contaminants from the cleaning fluid, with the ability to effectively filter out particulate matter and extend the life of the cleaning solution.

5. Semi-Automation: The system should include a semi-automation option, with a precision-guided overhead gantry, pneumatic cylinders, and a touch-screen HMI for programming and control.

6. Agitation and Oscillation: The system should allow for adjustable agitation and oscillation of the parts, with programmable timers and adjustable stroke length and speed.

7. Pause and Resume Functionality: The system should have a process pause feature, allowing operators to pause the cleaning cycle to manually inspect or manipulate parts.

8. Program Management: The system should have the ability to store and recall multiple programs, with programmable timers and settings for different parts and processing requirements.

9. Safety Features: The system should include safety features such as input monitoring, manual controls, and a limited warranty covering parts and labor.

10. Materials and Construction: The system should be constructed from durable, corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel, with a minimum tank size of 50" x 25" x 12" tall.

11. Weapon System Compatibility: The system must be designed to accommodate the cleaning and maintenance requirements of the M240, M249, M4, M18, MK19, and M2 weapons systems, including the ability to clean and process parts such as barrels, receivers, and other components.

12. Warranty: The system must be covered by a minimum 2-year parts and labor warranty, with the manufacturer providing repair or replacement of defective components and labor to repair or replace such components at no additional cost to the customer.

13. Cleaning Solution Compatibility: The system must be compatible with a cleaning solution that meets California environmental requirements, such as a solution that is:

· VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) compliant

· Non-toxic and non-corrosive

· Biodegradable

· Free of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs)

· Compliant with California Air Resources Board (CARB) and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) regulations

14. Mobility: The Machine should be on wheels to move around.

15. Training: The machine must come with training material to familiarize SFS with the operation of the machine.

The system should be able to handle the unique cleaning and maintenance requirements of these weapons systems, including the removal of carbon, copper, and other residues, and the application of lubricants and preservatives as needed. The system should also be designed to minimize damage to sensitive components and to prevent the introduction of contaminants into the weapons systems.
