STATEMENT OF NEED
Requiring Office Name: OAR/Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory (AOML)
PURPOSE:
The Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory (AOML)/Ocean Chemistry & Ecosystems Division (OCED) request the purchase of a CB-75 Buoy system and associated accessories and oceanographic equipment. This system will be part of the monitoring station located on the Port Everglades outer entrance channel that is currently monitoring the water quality previous dredging operations for the harbor expansion.
SCOPE OR MISSION:
Our mission is to establish the methods and protocols need for a near-real time water quality monitoring, and test the durability and longevity of the instruments and frame assembly likely to be deployed for project monitoring and adaptive management during dredging operations, test and configure data acquisition and alert system (EIS)through calibration by in-situ data collection.
BACKGROUND:
PORT EVERGLADES DREDGING PROJECT
AOML has been collaborating with the Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) and NOAA Fisheries SERO to monitor a major dredging project which will happen around the end of the year at Port Everglades, FL. In 2018, Port Everglades was ranked the third busiest cruise home port in the world with more than 3.8 million passengers visiting this busy city with a population growing from 80K in 1960 to over 180K in 2017. Port Everglades is a seaport in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County which has 24 miles of coastline along the southeastern coast of Florida, with its coral reefs considered part of the Florida Reef Tract, which is a 360 mile stretch of coral reefs of various types from Dry Tortugas in the south to St. Lucie Inlet on the north, making it the third largest barrier reef ecosystem in the world. Recently, the city of Fort Lauderdale has garnered funds to expand this busy seaport to accommodate more and bigger ships, and thus AOML, USACE and Fisheries are collaborating to make sure the dredging of the port and construction of the newly enlarged port does not adversely affect the offshore coral reef ecosystem. The deployment of a multiparametric system including several oceanographic equipment such as the ones provided by Fondriest, will allow to characterize and monitor que water quality over the Port Everglades study area.
