About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the development and testing of four extreme temperature-resistant rope seals for use in Rotating Detonation Rocket Engines (RDREs). The SOW requires the contractor to finalize the design of the seal grooves and rope seals, fabricate four rope seals using either carbon-graphite fibers or advanced ceramic fibers that have demonstrated the ability to withstand 3000°F oxidizing environments, and ship the seals to the Air Force's RDRE test facility for evaluation.
The related federal contract opportunity is a Sources Sought notice for four 3000°F rope seals, with a NAICS code of 314994. The notice invites small business concerns to identify their interest and capabilities in providing the required seals. Responses should include company information, small business status, and a description of relevant capability and experience. Responses are due by October 9, 2024 at 10 AM Eastern Time and should be submitted via email to the contracting officer.

Additional Work SOW // Minimum Requirements Document
3000F RDRE Extreme Combustion Environment Rope Seals
Background and Scope:
To date no one has created a rope seal made from any fiber capable of surviving the 3000F oxidizing combustion environment of a Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) for any relevant multi minutes of exposure duration. Two new fiber classes have recently come onto the market which have demonstrated the ability to sustain acceptable properties when exposed to 3000F oxidizing environments: Near Stochiometric SiC very low Oxygen content ceramics fibers are one, Post rope seal fabricated metal carbided fiber surfaces carbon-graphite fibers are a second. Fibers from these new classes need to be fabricated into, in part braided, rope seals and their survivability tested in an RDRE.
Requirements:
The contractor team will work with the AF’s Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) development branch to finalize the shape and dimensions of two seal grooves and subsequently the dimensions and constituent architecture of the extreme 3000F environment surviving rope seals designs capable of surviving the combustion leakage environment of a firing RDRE’s 3000F exhaust.
The contractor team shall fabricate four rope seals, two made from a carbon-graphite fiber (which will subsequently be surface metal carbided modified/treated) and another two made from an advanced near Stochiometric SiC very low Oxygen ceramic fiber into the necessary final rope seal length forms. Both fibers must have previously demonstrated the ability to survive and maintain adequate extreme 3000F RDRE combustion environment relevant related properties and the contractor team must provide proof they have previously fabricated (to some degree braided) rope seals from these two extreme 3000F surviving fibers.
The contractor shall ship the seals to the Edwards AFB RDRE test facility for testing in an AF government RDRE.
The contractor shall document the results in a small final report.
Product Description:
Finalize the shape and dimensions of a seal groove and subsequently the dimensions and constituent architecture of an extreme environment surviving rope seal design capable of surviving the combustion leakage environment of the 3000F exhaust of a firing RDRE.
Fabricate four rope seals, two made from carbon fiber (subsequently surface modified/treated) and another two made from an advanced ceramic fiber, both fibers previously demonstrated to survive and maintain adequate extreme 3000F RDRE combustion environment relevant seal related properties.
Ship the four seals to the AF government RDRE test facility for testing.
