About this file

This document is a technical specification for a family of reusable containers designed for packaging major repairables (WRA/SRA) for the U.S. Navy Aviation Supply Office. The specification establishes detailed manufacturing, quality control, and performance requirements for fiberglass or polyethylene-based containers used in military shipping and storage operations.

The containers must comply with Air Transport Association Specification 300, Category 1, and meet specific construction standards including molded fiberglass or virgin polyethylene shells with integrated plastic or aluminum tongue-in-groove closures, quarter-turn fasteners (Simmons part number 82240 B1900-1144), chest-type handles with spring-loaded ball retention, and automatic two-way pressure relief valves (MIL-V-27166) with 0.5 psig cracking pressure. Cushioning must conform to MIL-P-26514 Type 1, Class 2, Grade C polyurethane material with specific dimensions: solid top and bottom pads (3 inches thick), and side/end pads (3 inches thick including 1-inch convolutions). The specification includes detailed dimension tables for 29 container sizes ranging from 4x4x8 inches to 34x24x21 inches, with dummy load weights from 6.0 to 110.0 pounds and corresponding drop heights from 18 to 30 inches. Quality assurance provisions require first article inspection with 80 instrumented drops (ASTM D-775) plus 26 non-instrumented low-temperature drops (-20°F), leak testing via pneumatic pressure (0.5 psig initial, 25% pressure loss limit over 30 minutes), and production inspection sampling of 1 percent minimum per lot with witness requirements. Container identification must include part numbers, Navy part numbers (80132-13414-XXX formats), and supplemental markings ("DO NOT REMOVE ITEM UNTIL READY FOR USE," "REUSABLE - DO NOT DESTROY CONTAINER/CUSHIONING," "THIS CONTAINER MUST BE RETURNED TO SUPPLY AT TIME OF EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE OR WHEN NOT IN USE") applied using water-resistant inks per MIL-I-43553. First article samples must be submitted to Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck, NJ 07722-5000, Code 403, with test results and Form DD1423 documentation required within 10 days of approval.
