About this file

This is a technical specification and procurement document for reusable shipping and storage containers used for packaging major repairables for the U.S. Navy, issued by the Aviation Supply Office.

The containers must be molded from fiberglass, virgin polyethylene, or other virgin synthetic/plastic materials, with an integrated tongue-in-groove closure system featuring round or extruded gaskets. Fasteners shall be quarter-turn Simmons type (part number B2240) B1900-1144 or equivalent with lead wire seals, affixed to four sides of the case. Containers require chest-type handles designed for surface mounting with stops to hold the ball at a right angle, attached by sealed rivets. An automatic two-way pressure relief valve conforming to MIL-V-27166 with 0.5 psig cracking pressure and 0.25 psig minimum sealing pressure must be included. Male stacking ribs (maximum 1 inch wide, minimum 3/8 inch high) and female stacking ribs shall be provided on top and bottom. Cushioning shall conform to MIL-P-26514, Type 1, Class 2, Grade C, with polyurethane-polyether flame retardant material forming three-inch thick top and bottom pads and three-inch side/end pads with one-inch deep convolutions. Containers must be marked with part numbers, NSN, container identification per ASO Drawing 80132-15064, and supplemental markings including "DO NOT REMOVE ITEM UNTIL READY FOR USE" and "REUSABLE—DO NOT DESTROY CONTAINER/CUSHIONING." Permanent keying markings shall indicate proper orientation of top to bottom sections.

Quality assurance requirements include First Article Inspection and Production Inspection. First Article testing includes 80 instrumented drop tests with dummy loads conforming to Table I, a low-temperature non-instrumented drop test (-20°F/-29°C with 26 drops), and leak tests using pneumatic pressure technique with stabilization at 0.5 psig. Drop test height specifications are provided in Table II based on gross weight. Production inspection requires examination of samples, drop testing onto eight corners, twelve edges, and six surfaces, and leak testing. Container dimensions, cavity sizes, gross cube, estimated weights, and dummy load weights are specified in Table I for multiple NSN configurations ranging from 4x4x8 to 34x24x18 inches. The government is responsible for First Article Inspection performance, while the contractor is responsible for Production Inspection performance. All inspections must be witnessed by a government representative.
