Summary

This is a technical specifications document for the City of St. Marys, Georgia, detailing requirements for the Wheeler Street Boat Ramp Boat Launch Dock Gangway Replacement project (Project No. 23-1003). The project involves the design, fabrication, and installation of a new prefabricated aluminum gangway system at GPS coordinates 30°43'12.16"N 81°33'0.35"W on St. Marys Street West at the south end of Wheeler Street. The gangway shall be manufactured by Ravens Marine, Gator Dock & Marine, or a Design Criteria Professional-approved equivalent. All work must comply with standards established by the Aluminum Association, American Institute of Steel Construction, American Welding Society, and applicable ASTM specifications. The gangway system must be designed for a twenty-year life expectancy and carry a five-year warranty covering all materials and workmanship. The contractor must submit engineering calculations sealed by a Georgia-registered Professional Engineer, dimensional layouts, and detailed connection specifications prior to fabrication.

The gangway shall be constructed from aluminum alloy 6061-T6 with 300 series stainless steel hardware suitable for saltwater service. The gangway must withstand a minimum uniform live load of 100 pounds per square foot with allowable deflection of L/240, feature non-skid decking, bilateral handrails with a minimum 42-inch clear distance, and include UHMW polyurethane rollers with stainless steel axles at the dock interface. The hinge connection must include secondary redundancy to prevent separation if welds fail, and the design must accommodate water level fluctuations while protecting the floating dock surface. The installing contractor must have a minimum of five years' experience in comparable gangway manufacturing and installation, and all welders must be qualified in accordance with AWS D1.1/D1.1M for steel and AWS D1.2/D1.2M for aluminum. The specifications emphasize that the contractor is responsible for verifying existing conditions, identifying conflicts, and ensuring construction does not disrupt existing boat launch and recovery operations.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.1 DESIGN OF GANGWAY SYSTEM

The gangway hinge and transition plates shall be designed to withstand a minimum uniform live load of 100 pounds per square foot applied vertically. Allowable deflection shall be L/240, where "L" is the free span between contact points in inches. The hinge connection to the fixed pierhead shall be designed with a secondary means of redundancy to prevent separation if the knuckle welds fail. The dead load weight of

Rev #0 – March 28, 2023 BMG PN 23-1003 133600-5 the gangway shall be coordinated with the floating dock design to ensure adequate flotation under gangway landing so that the landing area maintains the same freeboard as the rest of the floating docks.
