About this file

This document outlines requirements for a megapixel photon-counting x-ray camera and related computer server. The National Institute of Standards and Technology requires a large-area x-ray camera with over 2 million pixels between 40-150 microns in size, covering an active area of at least 40 square centimeters. The camera must be capable of detecting x-rays from 6-15 keV and counting over 100,000 photons per second per pixel at a frame rate above 4 frames per second. Support electronics and the ability to operate in a vacuum are also required. Additionally, a computer server is specified to control and read out the camera system running Linux or another network-compatible operating system. The solicitation requests quotations by January 15, 2023 for this equipment to support research at NIST's Quantum Sensors Group.

TITLE: Megapixel photon-counting x-ray camera Requesting Lab/Division/Group: PML, 687.08

General Statement of Need NIST’s Quantum Sensors Group (QSG) requires a large x-ray camera for research in x-ray computed tomography of silicon-based microcircuits and other objects with features smaller than 1 µm. We will use an optical system with 1000x magnification to image sub-micron features of the samples onto a camera that has pixels of much larger size.

The camera must have positional resolution and high count-rate capabilities. Measurement of x-ray spectra is not required, but the user must be able to select a suitable minimum x-ray energy threshold for photon counting. To achieve the imaging speed target, the camera must have a large active area (ideally close to square), covered by millions of detector pixels capable of counting photons independently and simultaneously. To achieve the spatial resolution requirements, the camera must have individual detector pixels approximately 100 µm in size.

The camera must be mountable in a vacuum chamber so it can be placed within centimeters of the test sample.

Items and/or Ancillary Services

Item 1: Photon-counting x-ray camera Quantity: 1 Specifications: Specification 1.1: the camera must consist of at least 2,000,000 detector pixels that count x-ray photons independently, in one or at most two separate areas. Specification 1.2: Each pixel must be between 40 µm and 150 µm in size (each lateral dimension). Specification 1.3: The complete camera or cameras must have an active area of at least 40 square centimeters. Specification 1.4: The camera must detect x rays over the energy range of 6 keV (or less) to 15 keV (or higher). Specification 1.5: Each pixel must be capable of counting at least 100,000 photons per second. Specification 1.6: The camera must be read out at a frame rate of at least 4 frames per second. Specification 1.7: The camera must be capable of operation in vacuum. Specification 1.8: the camera must allow the user control over the x-ray counting threshold energy. Specification 1.9: support electronics must be supplied to control the camera; to cool the camera; to provide its operating voltage from standard 60 Hz AC power; and to convert the camera frames to computer-readable form.

Separately Priced Options and Services:

Item 2: Computer server to control and read out the camera Quantity: 1 Specifications: Specification 1.1: the server must be able to control and read out the camera, including its support electronics. Specification 1.2: the server should run Linux or any operating system capable of network communication with existing laboratory computers. Specification 1.3: Any Windows server shall run Windows 10 64-bit and shall include:TPM 2.0, Secure Boot / UEFI, and Trusted Execution technology.
