Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: 5G Open Radio Access Network (RAN) System

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Spectrum Technology and Research Division Shared Spectrum Metrology Group (675.03)

General Statement of Need:

There is a need to procure a complete, end-to-end Open Radio Access Network (RAN) 5G Standalone (SA). This system will operate in the configuration shown in Figure 1. This configuration is also commonly known as “split 7.2” (as defined by O-RAN alliance specification). An Open RAN base station is comprised of a Radio Unit (RU), a Distributed Unit (DU), a Central Unit (CU). Because of the early stage of the Open RAN system development, the software and hardware manufacturers may use a specific software or hardware with their product(s). As we want to have a complete, working end-to-end Open RAN 5G system in our facility, we seek to procure a complete system including a 5G core (5GC), 5G handset (UE) in addition to the Open RAN base station. In the future, as part of our research, we may look to integrate parts of this end-to-end system with other hardware/software to examine methods for measuring interoperability between Open RAN hardware. This additional hardware is not part of this procurement.

Items and Ancillary Services:

Item 1: 5G New Radio (NR) Base Station (gNB) CU Software and (1) DU Software Set

Quantity: 1 set Specifications: 1.1 Support the feature sets outlined in 3rd Generation

Partnership Project (3GPP) release 15 and Open RAN 1.0.

Support for more current releases of 3GPP and Open RAN will be considered as part of the evaluation criteria.

1.2 Only CU and DU software features and builds that are part of the Contractor’s “production” software version will be considered. Features offered as part of an “alpha” or “beta” release will not be considered for evaluation.

1.3 License(s) shall be PERPETUAL. That is, the license to use the software delivered never expires. This does not include receiving software patches or new feature updates.

1.5 Support the logging of parameters from the mid-haul and

front-haul interface(s). Logging and extraction of log files may be accomplished through a separate interface.

Item 2: Hardware capable of running the 5G NR gNB CU and DU Software Set (Item 1)

Quantity: 1 Specifications: 2.1 Support both the DU and CU software. That is, we require one physical server that can support both the CU and DU.

The CU and DU may be installed as separate virtual machines, if required.

2.2 If applicable, any licenses associated with CU-DU hardware (e.g., operating system) shall be PERPETUAL.

2.3 Support the connection scheme shown in Figure 1.

Item 3: 5G NR gNB RU Time Division Duplex (TDD) Software/Firmware Quantity: 1 Specifications: 3.1 Support the feature sets outlined in 3GPP release 15 and

Open RAN 1.0.

Support for more current releases of 3GPP and Open RAN will be considered as part of the evaluation criteria.

3.2 Only RU software features and builds that are part of the Contractor’s “production” software version will be considered.

Features offered as part of an “alpha” or “beta” release will not be considered for evaluation.

3.3 License(s) shall be PERPETUAL.

3.4 Support the connection scheme shown in Figure 1.

3.5 Support up to 100 MHz contiguous cell bandwidth.

3.6 Shall support at least one of the 3GPP standardized

frequency bands below 6 GHz.

If the Contractor offers a product that functions in the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band, any additional hardware required to operate the system (e.g., an ESC (Environmental Sensing Capability) must be included in the quote.

NOTE: System will not be deployed in an outdoor environment. Only in a shielded laboratory environment.

3.7 Support enhance Common Public Radio Interface (eCPRI)

interface.

3.8 Shall support the connection scheme shown in Figure 1.

Item 4: 5G NR gNB RU TDD Hardware Quantity: 1 Specifications: 4.1 Support the feature sets outlined in 3GPP release 15 and

Open RAN 1.0.

Support for more current releases of 3GPP and Open RAN will be considered as part of the evaluation criteria.

4.2 Only RU hardware features and builds that are part of the Contractor’s “production” hardware version will be considered.

Features offered as part of an “alpha” or “beta” release will not be considered for evaluation.

4.3 License(s) shall be PERPETUAL.

4.4 Support the connection scheme shown in Figure 1.

4.5 Support up to 100 MHz contiguous cell bandwidth.

4.6 Support at least one of the 3GPP standardized frequency

bands below 6 GHz. If the Contractor offers a product that functions in the CBRS band, any additional hardware required to operate the system (e.g., an ESC (Environmental Sensing Capability) must be included in the quote).

NOTE: System will not be deployed in an outdoor environment. Only in a shielded laboratory environment.

4.7 Support eCPRI interface.

4.8 Support both radiated (i.e., over-the-air) and conducted RF connections, but not simultaneously.

That is the, the RU hardware shall have antenna ports accessible on the exterior of the hardware with a compatible antenna.

Basic compatible antenna(s) shall be included.

4.9 Support a minimum of 4T4R configuration and 4 x 250

milliwatts output power

50 UEs.

5.2 The 5GC software shall support Access and Mobility

Management (AMF) functionalities.

5.3 The 5GC software shall support Session Management

Function (SMF) functionalities.

5.4 The 5GC software shall support User Plane Function (UPF)

functionalities.

5.5 Only 5GC software and hardware features and builds that

are part of the Contractor’s “production” hardware version will be considered. Features offered as part of an “alpha” or “beta” release will not be considered for evaluation.

5.6 The 5GC hardware and software license shall be perpetual.

That is, the license to use the software delivered never expires. This does not include receiving software patches or new feature updates.

5.7 The 5GC shall support the logging of parameters from the

backhaul interface(s). Logging and extraction of log files may be accomplished through a separate interface.

5.8 The hardware used to run the 5GC shall be independent of

the hardware used to run the CU-DU software. That is, the two may not run on the same physical server. They must be separate pieces of hardware.
