About this file
This document is a detailed specification for Trimedlure (TML) solid dispensers developed by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) for their Mediterranean fruit fly control program. The specifications outline comprehensive technical requirements for the production, testing, packaging, and delivery of solid dispensers that contain a minimum of 2 grams of trimedlure. The dispensers must meet strict performance criteria, including controlled release rates, resistance to moisture and damage, ease of installation, and the ability to maintain efficacy for one year when stored at 20°C. The document provides extensive testing procedures for emission rates, chemical assay, and bioassay performance, with specific methodologies for gas chromatography analysis and quality control.
The payment and delivery terms indicate that CDFA will compensate the vendor after successful bioassay testing, which will be completed within 60 calendar days of receipt. If the TML dispensers fail to perform satisfactorily, the vendor must either provide a new lot of dispensers for testing or cover all return shipping and replacement costs. The dispensers must be produced in no more than three lots and packaged according to detailed specifications, including individual moisture-proof packaging and cartons that can be stacked up to 60 inches high. Delivery and technical questions should be directed to specific CDFA contacts in Anaheim and Sacramento, with the primary technical contact being Jason Leathers in the Pest Detection/Emergency Projects division.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR TRIMEDLURE SOLID DISPENSERS
California Department of Food and Agriculture (12/17/2024)
1. SCOPE AND SPECIFICATIONS
1.1 Scope:
The dispensers shall be formulated so as to constitute a contiolled release delivery system utilizing pure Trimedlure (TML).
1.2 Specifications:
The solid dispensers shall meet the following specifications:
1. Contain a minimum of 2 grams of trimedlure*.
2. Be free of liquid trimedlure on the unit surface.
3. Be nonfriable and resistant to damage during normal field operations.
4. Be resistant to moisture.
5. Be easily and quickly installed, with minimum contamination of the dispenser from the trap adhesive, when used in a Jackson plastic bait basket and/or Champ trap.
Samples of the plastic bait basket and Champ trap are available upon request.
6. Under normal handling, shipping and deployment the dispenser shall maintain its shape and not crumble, break or shatter.
7. Once installed, dispenser must not be easily dislodged from the trap.
8. Be prepared from common, nontoxic commercial material.
9. Be capable of being stored at 20°C for one year with no reduction in efficacy.
*Trimedlure solid dispensers must meet the specifications as outlined in this document dated December 17, 2024.
2. PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS
2.1 Chemical Assay:
Following field aging of production-lot dispensers, the residual lure content shall be at least 1 gram after 1 week and 0.4 gram after 6 weeks of aging; the release rates of trimedlure at 28°C in a laboratory test shall be at least 0. 7 milligrams per hour per dispenser after 1 week and 0.4 milligrams per hour per dispenser after 6 weeks aging. Reference dispensers of known quality (previously tested and approved) will be analyzed with each test as a control.
2.2 Bioassay:
Following field aging of production-lot dispensers, for 1 and 6 weeks, the number of Medflies captured shall be at least 50 percent of that caught by standard freshly baited Richmond cotton wick baited with
2.0 milliliter of the same bulk trimedlure as used for the dispensers .

4. In the morning, place plugs one to a chamber. Adjust gas glow to 100 ml/min.
5. After 1 hour of equilibration in the chamber, remove the plug and weigh. Return the plug to the chamber.
6. The plugs are reweighed every 2 hours. The average weight loss per hour over a 6-hour period is considered the emission rate.
4.5 Procedure for Testing Trimedlure Extraction
1. The plug used for emission rate should not be used for extraction.
2. Drop the in one pint jar and 200 ml 50/50 acetone/hene. Allow the plug to leach at room temperature for at least 48 hours, with intermittent mixing.
2. Using 3 ml volumetric pipette transfer 3 ml aliquot to a 100 ml volumetric flask and dilute to the mark with acetone/hexane mixture.
4. Samples are ready for analysis by GC/FID.
Five micro liters (ul) of each sample are injected onto a GC/FID after calibration with known concentration of "C" isomer.
4.6 Suggested Gas Chromatography Parameters

4. 7 Trimedlure Content Calculation = (A)(C)(D/B)
Where: A=Total peak area (PAU) for the two Trimedlure peaks in the sample.
B= PAU for the "C" isomer the standard C=Standard concentration in mg.
D=Dilution factor
