About this file

This document is a detailed specification for a colorimeter (spectrophotometer) requested by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the Eastern Regional Research Center in Wyndmoor, PA. The research unit seeks a device to measure color in various food products as part of their research on food safety interventions. The colorimeter must have specific technical requirements, including multiple illumination areas (6 mm and 11 mm diameters), ability to read colors on curved surfaces and small samples, a screen display, fast measuring speed, and a compact design (3.5 in x 9 in x 5 in, max 2 lbs).

The required accessories include a hard case, vertical leveling jig, wrist strap, charging cradle, and white calibration cap. The device must be versatile enough to measure color in solid foods like eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, as well as liquid foods such as juices. Additional specifications include a camera viewfinder, color difference analysis software, hand-held design, tripod compatibility, and calibration plates in ten different colors. The colorimeter will be delivered to the USDA-ARS at 600 East Mermaid Lane, Wyndmoor, PA 19038, supporting the research unit's mission of ensuring microbial food safety while maintaining product quality.

Colorimeter (Spectrophotometer) Specifications Bermudez-Aguirre

The research unit “Characterization and Interventions for Foodborne Pathogens” at the Eastern Regional Research Center in Wyndmoor, PA investigates innovative technologies to control and inactivate pathogens in different food commodities. Some of these interventions are radio frequency, cold plasma, pulsed light and ultrasound. The mission of our research is to ensure the microbial food safety of the product after using the different interventions; however, quality needs to be like the fresh product. Color is one of the main quality attributes that consumers look at when deciding to purchase a food product. Then, as part of our research, the evaluation of color is a basic need during our research. This purchase request is for a colorimeter (spectrophotometer) that can be used to measure the color of eggs, fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and liquid foods such as juices.

Specifications:

The colorimeter (spectrophotometer) must have the following characteristics:

a) It has an illumination area of at least 6 mm (diameter), so the measurement area is at least 3 mm (diameter) for small objects

b) It has an illumination area of at least 11 mm (diameter), so the measurement area is at least 6 mm (diameter) for medium size samples

c) It can read colors in curved surfaces and small samples (seeds, nuts)

d) It has a screen display with readings

e) It has a fast-measuring speed to evaluate several samples

f) It has a small footprint required to meet current available lab space (3.5 in x 9 in x 5 in) and maximum weight 2 lbs

g) It can be used to measure color of solid foods such as eggs, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, but also liquid foods such as fruit juices, egg albumen and yolk.

h) It contains calibration plates in the following colors: white, gray, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, cyan, and black

i) It has a camera viewfinder to improve sample accuracy during reading

j) It has software that analyzes color differences between samples (i.e. color net change, ∆E)

k) It has a hand-held design, so it can be used in different labs and the pilot plant

l) It is compatible with a tripod

The colorimeter (spectrophotometer) should have the following accessories:

a) Hard case for storage and transportation

b) A vertical leveling jig

c) A wrist strap

d) A cradle for charging and a charging terminal spot

e) A white calibration cap
