About this file
This is a technical specification document for shellfish nursery equipment to be provided to the USDA. The document specifies requirements for two main components: shellfish nursery tanks and oyster upweller/downweller tubes for rearing juvenile oysters in an animal husbandry operation.
The specification requires two rectangular FRP tanks measuring 144"L x 48"W x 12"D with minimum 0.25" finished FRP walls and bottom using structural layers equivalent to 24 oz woven roving. Each tank must include a 3" overhang for tube handle support, FDA-approvable materials, white gel coat interior (20 mils thick), grey gel coat exterior (10 mils thick), and two internal baffle dividers creating a 10" central channel. The tanks require three 2" PVC standpipe drains for upwelling/downwelling configuration, eight 6" PVC legs with FRP receptacles for support, and specific baffle stiffener placement that accommodates 1" PVC bulkheads to be drilled by USDA. Additionally, 120 circular oyster tubes are required, each constructed of 1/8" finished FRP with 12" internal diameter, 9" height, 1" bottom flange, and 5" handle, featuring FDA-approvable materials with white interior gel coat (20 mils) and grey exterior gel coat (10 mils). All surfaces must be free of sharp edges or burrs to ensure safe animal production use.

Text version
Shellfish Nursery Tank specifications per unit. 2 tables required.
A rectangular, reinforced flat bottom fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) tank measuring 144” L x 48” W x 12” D internal dimensions is needed for rearing juvenile oysters. Tank walls and bottom must be at least 0.25” finished FRP with structural layers (24 oz woven roving or equivalent). Tank must have a minimum of 3” overhang along the top perimeter to provide support for oyster tube handles. FDA approvable materials required as nursery tank is used for animal husbandry. Interior tank coating (all seawater wetted surfaces) shall be white gel coat that is at least 20 mils thick. Exterior surfaces will be grey gel coat, 10 mils thick (minimum) and free of sharp projections, sharp edges or burrs.
Each tank needs (2) internal 144” L x 12” H fiberglass baffle dividers placed at 19” and 38” along the 48” axis creating a 10” wide central channel. The 10” channel must have a minimum of 20 mils thick white get coat. Two baffle stiffeners (not to exceed 8” wide per baffle) centered at 43” and 100” (measured from inside edge of the tank) from the end of each baffle divider, placed inside the smaller channel are needed for enhanced rigidity. Baffle ribs and their attachments to the interior of baffle divider can not interfere with 1” PVC bulkheads (to be drilled by USDA) for nursery tubes (see figure below for exact placements). Three tank drains are needed to enable using the tank in an upwelling or downwelling configuration. Each drain will use 2” PVC standpipes, so drains must be watertight with a non-modified 2” PVC pipe. One drain is located in the 10” center channel, being 3.5” from tank wall centered in the 10” channel. The other 2 drains are located in the corners closest to the center channel drain, placed immediately adjacent to tank and baffle walls at the same end as the center drain (see figure below). Eight 6” legs will be used to support the table and fiberglass receptacles are needed on the 4 corners and at appropriate locations in between to support the tank when full of seawater. The 6” PVC legs must fit into FRP receptacles snugly, but without modification to the PVC legs.
Oyster upweller/downweller tube specification: require 120 total tubes.
Circular tube constructed of 1/8” (or thicker) finished Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) measuring 12” internal diameter, 9” tall with a 1” wide flange on bottom. On the non-flange end of the tube a 5” handle (square or rectangular shape) is needed. Because these are used for animal production, FDA approvable materials required. Interior gel coat should be white in color and a minimum of 20 mils thick, while exterior surfaces should be grey gel coat at 10 mils thick. No sharp edges or burrs on any surface of the oyster tube.
