About this file
The document is a Requirements/Specification Document for a 50K Cryogen-Free Cryocooler, issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the Superconductive Electronics Group. The cryocooler is needed for testing high temperature superconducting (HTS) devices for an integratable Josephson Voltage Standard (JVS) project funded by Air Force Metrology and Calibration (AFMETCAL). Specific technical requirements include a base temperature of 50 K with temperature fluctuations not exceeding ±150 mK, air cooling, a cooling power of at least 2 W at 50 K, and the ability to interface with an existing vacuum system.
Key specifications mandate the cryocooler be a new, commercially established product with an integrated cold head and compressor, weighing no more than 10 lbs, operable on 120 VAC/60 Hz power, and having a Mean Time Before Failure of at least 100,000 hours. The device must have a temperature controller interfaceable with a PC via USB, be mountable to a vacuum chamber, and have a cold head made of oxygen-free, high-conductivity copper. The procurement is currently in a Sources Sought stage, with NIST seeking to determine if small businesses can provide the specialized equipment, potentially leading to a small business set-aside contract under NAICS code 334516.

Requirements / Specification Document
TITLE: 50K Cryocooler
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory RF Technology Division Superconductive Electronics Group MS 672.06
General Statement of Need:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology, along with the Superconductive Electronics Group (672.06), requires a cryocooler for testing high temperature superconducting (HTS) devices for our integratable Josephson Voltage Standard (JVS) project funded by Air Force Metrology and Calibration (AFMETCAL). The base operating temperature needs to be 50 K at the device to achieve desired performance metrics.
Temperature needs to be continuously variable from the 50 Kelvin base temperature to above the superconducting transition temperature of the devices, as the HTS devices can degrade for various reasons (humidity, heat, chemical exposure, etc.) and the transition temperature is a simple and necessary metric to fingerprint the quality of superconducting film. Fast cooling time (~minutes) is needed for testing robustness of the devices against many thermal cycles within a reasonable time frame. Additionally, the cryocooler needs to be able to interface with our existing vacuum system that is purpose-built for testing HTS devices.
Item Specifications and Quantities:
Item 1: 50K Cryogen-Free Cryocooler Quantity: 1 EACH Specifications: 1.1 The base temperature at the cold head shall be not more than
50 K and shall not fluctuate more than ±150 mK.
1.2 The cryocooler shall have a temperature controller to achieve steady state operation at any temperature between 50 K and 100 K.
1.3 The cryocooler shall have the cold head integrated directly with the compressor.
1.4 The cryocooler shall be air cooled.
1.5 Under air cooling, the cryocooler shall have cooling power not less than 2 W at a cold head temperature of 50 K.
1.6 The cryocooler shall require no cryogenic liquids to be added by the user after delivery.
1.7 The cryocooler shall be mountable to a vacuum chamber via 4.5-inch ConFlat vacuum flange.
1.8 The end of the cold head shall not extend less than 2 inches above the mounting vacuum flange.
1.9 The cold head of the cryocooler shall be made from oxygen-free, high-conductivity (OFHC) copper and have a lateral footprint of at least 1.5” x 1.5”.
1.10 The weight of the cryocooler (integrated compressor and cold finger) shall not be more than 10 lbs (4.5 kg), nor shall its physical dimensions exceed 12 inches in overall length or 8 inches in overall width.
1.11 The temperature controller shall be interfaceable with a PC via USB.
1.12 The cryocooler shall be operable on single phase 120 VAC / 60 Hz input power and NEMA 5-15 receptacle(s).
1.13 The cryocooler’s rated Mean Time Before Failure shall not be less than 100,000 hours.
1.14 There will be a plan for cryocooler maintenance.
1.15 The cryocooler must be an established commercial product with at least one unit of comparable complexity operating successfully in the field. Experimental or prototype items are not acceptable.
1.16 The cryocooler shall be a new (not refurbished or
reconditioned) item covered by the original manufacturer’s full warranty. The use of “gray market” components not authorized for sale in the U.S. by the proposer is not acceptable.
