About this file

This is a specification document for a UV-LED chamber procurement by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Eastern Regional Research Center in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. The research unit "Characterization and Interventions for Foodborne Pathogens" requires laboratory equipment to evaluate blue light (405 nm wavelength) effects on microbial inactivation in food commodities including eggs, fruits, and vegetables as part of nonthermal pathogen control research.

The UV-LED chamber must meet the following mandatory specifications: operate at 405 nm wavelength with capability for additional wavelengths; provide variable irradiance from 0 to 800 mW/cm² with adjustable output from 1 to 100 percent; include an integrated irradiance sensor for continuous monitoring; feature a heating/cooling plate for temperature control ranging from 10 to 40°C using air cooling; incorporate a dose controller and data recording capability with rates from 1 second to 1 hour; include a timer with second-level precision; and fit within laboratory footprint dimensions of 40 x 30 x 50 cm. The equipment must include an operational enclosure for operator protection. The related sole-source procurement notice (Solicitation Number 1174144) indicates the government intends to award to Opsytec Dr. Gröbel GmbH for their Model BSL-01i ECO+ system with integrated UV-MAT touch controller and RMD sensor calibrated to 405 nm. The technical point of contact is L. Daniela Bermudez-Aguirre at 215-233-6461 or daniela.bermudez@usda.gov.

UV-LED chamber Specifications The research unit “Characterization and Interventions for Foodborne Pathogens” at the Eastern Regional Research Center in Wyndmoor, PA investigates innovative technologies to control and inactivate pathogens in different food commodities. Some of these interventions include nonthermal processes such as cold plasma and light technologies. This purchase is for a UV-LED chamber to conduct research evaluating the effect of blue light (405 nm) on microbial inactivation for different food commodities such as eggs, fruits and vegetables.

Specifications:

The UV-LED chamber must have the following specifications:

a) Works at least 405 nm (wavelength). It is desirable to have additional wavelengths.

b) Have a variable irradiance (from 0 to 800 mW/cm2)

c) Being a lab unit

d) Irradiance can be adjusted from 1 to 100%

e) Have a sensor that measures irradiance constantly

f) Have a heating/cooling plate for temperature control

g) The chamber dimensions fit the footprint of the lab (40 x 30 x 50 cm, 15.74 in x 11.81 in x 19.68 in)

h) The working temperature goes from 10 to 40⁰C

i) The cooling of the chamber is done with air cooling

j) The system has a dose controller

k) It has a data recording rate from 1 s to 1 h

l) The system has a timer that counts seconds

m) It has an enclosure during operation to protect the operator
